Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Batavia
Batavia, NY sits in the middle of a diverse fishing region anchored by Oatka Creek, Tonawanda Creek, and a network of farm ponds and small lakes. Coldwater and warmwater options are both close, so planning revolves around season and water temperature. Spring and fall are prime for trout and river smallmouth, while summer favors bass, panfish, and nighttime catfish along the slower stretches of the creeks.
The standout moving water fishery near Batavia is Oatka Creek to the south and southeast. This classic limestone-influenced trout stream holds stocked and wild brown trout with a mix of rainbows and occasional brook trout in cooler tributaries. In early spring, focus on deeper bends, undercut banks, and slower pools using 1/16–1/8 oz inline spinners, small minnow plugs, or dead-drifted nymphs like Pheasant Tails and Hare’s Ears in sizes 12–16. As water warms and hatches build, late-afternoon and evening dry-fly fishing with caddis, Blue Winged Olives, and attractor dries becomes reliable. Light fluorocarbon leaders (4–6 lb for spin gear, 5X–6X for fly) are important in the clear water.
Tonawanda Creek and its branches closer to Batavia offer a mixed bag of smallmouth bass, pike, panfish, and the occasional walleye. In late spring and early summer, target smallmouth bass by working rocky outside bends, bridge pilings, and current seams with 3–4 inch soft plastic swimbaits, tubes, and ned rigs in natural shad or green pumpkin colors. Early and late in the day, topwater poppers and walk-the-dog baits draw aggressive strikes in low, clear water. For northern pike, focus on weedlines, submerged wood, and slower eddies, throwing 4–6 inch spoon-style lures, spinnerbaits, or suspending jerkbaits on 20–30 lb leader to prevent bite-offs.
Farm ponds and small public lakes in the Batavia area provide consistent largemouth bass and panfish action from late spring through early fall. Bass often stage on the first breakline off shore in May and June, then shift to weed edges, lily pads, and shade from overhanging trees in midsummer. Weightless soft stickbaits, wacky rigs, and 3/8 oz jigs with compact trailers excel in stained water. When fish are buried in vegetation, Texas-rigged plastics and hollow-body frogs fished across the pads produce quality bites. For kids or anyone looking for steady action, simple slip-float rigs baited with worms or small jigs tipped with soft plastics will catch bluegill, pumpkinseed, perch, and rock bass all day.
Night and low-light periods on Tonawanda Creek are prime for channel catfish, bullhead, and carp. Focus on deeper holes below bends, logjams, and confluences. Use 1/0–3/0 circle hooks with cut bait, chicken liver, or commercial catfish baits on slip-sinker rigs. For carp, pre-baiting with sweet corn and then fishing hair rigs or simple corn-on-the-hook setups on medium spinning tackle can yield powerful runs, especially on calm evenings.
Fall brings a second peak for both trout and river smallmouth around Batavia. Cooling water consolidates fish in slower wintering holes and along deeper structure. Downsized jerkbaits, 1/8 oz jigs, and small spinners fished slowly are productive, while fly anglers do well with streamers and larger nymphs bounced near the bottom. In winter, open leads in Oatka Creek and select creek stretches can still give up trout to patient anglers drifting jigs, nymphs, or small waxworm-tipped hooks under floats, with the key being slow presentations and precise depth control.
