Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Plattsburgh
Fishing in Plattsburgh, NY centers on Lake Champlain, a massive, fertile lake with diverse structure and a national reputation for bass and multi-species action. From ice-out through late fall, anglers launch out of Plattsburgh City Marina, Wilcox Dock, and nearby ramps to access rocky points, deep offshore humps, expansive weedbeds, and current-driven river mouths.
Spring (ice-out to early June) is prime time for cold-water species and staging bass. Lake trout, landlocked salmon, and brown trout roam the top 10–40 feet of the water column. Troll small spoons and stickbaits 1.8–2.4 mph along the main-lake drop-offs east of Plattsburgh, focusing on points and breaks in 40–80 feet. Flat-lines and planer boards cover water; add leadcore or shallow-set downriggers as the sun climbs. At the mouths of the Saranac and Ausable rivers, cast minnow-imitating jerkbaits and small swimbaits for salmon and browns pushing bait against current seams.
As water reaches the low 50s, smallmouth bass move shallow onto gravel flats and rocky shorelines. Target protected bays and points north and south of Plattsburgh with suspending jerkbaits, 3–4 inch tubes, and Ned rigs. Largemouth slide into emergent and early weed growth in back bays and marinas; flipping compact jigs, Texas-rigged creature baits, and slow-rolled spinnerbaits around isolated cover produces consistent bites.
Summer brings stable patterns and the most diverse options. Deep smallmouth set up on humps, shoals, and rock spines in 20–40 feet across the main lake and around Valcour Island. Use your electronics to find pods of bait and fish just off bottom. Drop-shot rigs with goby- or shiner-colored baits, 3–3.5 inch tubes, and football jigs dragged slowly along rock transitions are staples for tournament anglers operating out of Plattsburgh. Early and late in the day, work topwaters—walking baits and poppers—over shallow rock and scattered grass for aggressive fish.
For largemouth bass, focus on Champlain’s grass: milfoil, coontail, and mixed weeds in 4–10 feet in bays and along protected shorelines. Frogs and buzzbaits excel over matted or topped-out grass on cloudy days and low light. When the sun is high, pitch 3/8–1/2 oz jigs and Texas-rigged plastics into pockets in the vegetation. Northern pike and occasional muskie share these weedlines; upsize to larger spinnerbaits, inline spinners, and swimbaits to target them specifically.
Walleye, perch, and panfish offer consistent action around rock/weed edges and subtle points. In low-light periods, troll or cast crankbaits along 10–20 foot breaks for walleyes. During the day, vertical jig 1/8–1/4 oz jigs tipped with soft plastics or live bait on the deeper side of weed edges to find mixed schools of yellow perch, rock bass, and panfish. Carp and drum roam flats near the river mouths; carp respond well to chummed sweet corn or dough baits fished on simple bottom rigs.
Fall concentrates fish and often provides the best big-bass and trout action of the year. As water cools into the 60s and 50s, smallmouth push shallow onto windblown rock points and shorelines within quick access to deep water. Crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and bladed jigs that deflect off rock draw reaction strikes, while tubes and finesse rigs mop up pressured fish. Largemouth follow bait to remaining green weeds—locate the healthiest grass with side imaging and pick it apart methodically.
Lake trout and salmon slide shallower again, setting up along 30–60 foot breaks. Troll smaller spoons and stickbaits closer to the surface or vertically jig heavy spoons and blade baits over sharp drops. When temperatures drop further, late-season action near Plattsburgh remains strong until ice and weather limit access, giving persistent anglers a chance at some of Lake Champlain’s heaviest fish before winter.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 20 beaches and bays in this area.
