Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 14:41 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

Fishing Overview Henderson

Fishing around Henderson, Nevada revolves around Lake Mead, the Colorado River below Hoover Dam, and a handful of urban ponds that give anglers close-to-town options. The region’s desert climate creates distinct seasonal patterns, so timing and tactics matter as much as location. Focus on low-light periods, pay attention to water temps, and always factor in wind, which can turn Lake Mead from glassy calm to rough in a hurry.

Lake Mead striped bass are the main draw for many Henderson anglers. Spring and fall are prime seasons, when water temperatures are moderate and stripers push shallow to feed on threadfin shad. At first light, work points, coves, and backs of creek arms with topwater walking baits, soft jerkbaits, and swimbaits. As the sun gets higher, move deeper and use vertical presentations: jigging spoons, ice jigs, and soft plastics on 1/2–1 oz jig heads over submerged humps, drop-offs, and channel edges. Summer pushes stripers deeper; slow-trolling deep-diving crankbaits and umbrella rigs or dropping live shad over 40–100 ft of water can be highly effective.

Bass fishing near Henderson centers on Lake Mead’s largemouth and smallmouth populations. Clear water and rocky structure call for finesse. In late winter and early spring, target warming pockets and protected coves with Ned rigs, drop-shot worms, and compact jigs. As spawning approaches, work gently sloping shorelines and small cuts off main-lake coves. Through summer, bass slide to deeper ledges, points, and submerged brush; switch to Carolina rigs, football jigs, and deep-diving crankbaits. Early and late in the day, throw topwaters and jerkbaits along shaded rock walls and wind-blown points.

The Colorado River below Hoover Dam and associated tailwaters offer cooler flows that support trout and mixed-species opportunities. Rainbow trout respond well to small inline spinners, spoons, and salmon eggs drifted through current seams and eddies. Light spinning tackle and 4–6 lb line excel in this clear water. Deeper holes and slower runs hold catfish and the occasional bass; target these areas with cut bait, nightcrawlers, or prepared dough baits on simple slip-sinker rigs.

Urban lakes and desert ponds around Henderson—including neighborhood and community waters—produce quick, convenient trips. These smaller fisheries are typically stocked with rainbow trout in the cooler months and focus on catfish and warmwater species once temperatures climb. For trout, use small PowerBait nuggets, salmon eggs, or 1/16–1/8 oz spoons under a light spinning setup. In warmer water, fish chicken liver, hot dogs, or stink bait on the bottom for channel catfish, and target bluegill and sunfish with small pieces of worm under a bobber near reeds, rocks, and docks.

General tactical tips for Henderson fishing include downsizing line and lures in Lake Mead’s ultra-clear water—fluorocarbon leaders of 6–12 lb test dramatically improve bites. Electronics are invaluable on the big lake: use sonar to locate bait schools, depth changes, and suspended stripers before dropping baits. Wind blowing into a bank often concentrates shad; prioritize these areas for both bass and stripers. In urban ponds, keep mobile: if you’re not getting bit within 20–30 minutes, change depth, bait, or move to another corner of the lake. Fishing early mornings, evenings, and night—especially during summer—greatly improves comfort and catch rates in Henderson’s desert environment.
