Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 14:22 hours of daylight. 7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Ashland

Fishing around Ashland, Oregon centers on the Rogue River system, the Klamath Basin, and a network of productive mountain lakes and reservoirs. Within an hourโ€™s drive you can target steelhead, wild trout, bass, and panfish, making Ashland a versatile home base for anglers who want both big-river and stillwater options.

Seasonal patterns are key. Winter into early spring is prime time for Rogue River and upper Klamath steelhead, with fishable numbers usually present even when flows are up and water is green. Late spring brings strong trout fishing on the Rogue, Hyatt Lake, Howard Prairie, and Fish Lake as water temps stabilize and insect hatches intensify. Summer shifts focus to early-morning trout sessions on the Rogue and mountain lakes, plus excellent smallmouth action on the middle Rogue and bass in Emigrant and Lost Creek reservoirs. Fall is the most versatile season: steelhead begin staging in the Rogue, trout feed hard in cooling lakes, and kokanee and chinook become targetable in several reservoirs.

River and stream habitats near Ashland are dominated by the Rogue River and, to the east, the upper Klamath and its tributaries. On the Rogue, focus on bouldery riffles, long tailouts, and soft seams along the edges of main current for steelhead and trout. In higher flows, slide closer to the bank and target walking-speed water 3โ€“6 feet deep. In lower summer flows, work pocket water, deeper slots, and shaded undercut banks. The Klamath and its feeders hold native redband trout that often stack in cooler inflow areas and oxygenated riffles.

Stillwater options include Emigrant Lake just outside Ashland, plus Howard Prairie, Hyatt, Fish Lake, and Lost Creek Lake a short drive away. Look for rocky points, submerged creek channels, and weed edges for bass, while trout commonly cruise drop-offs near the old river or creek beds. During spring and fall, trout can be anywhere from the top 10 feet down to mid-depth; in summer, concentrate efforts early and late or fish deeper with lead-core line, downriggers, or weighted fly lines.

Effective techniques vary by water type. On the Rogue, steelhead respond well to swung flies on Skagit or Scandi heads with small intruders, traditional hair wings, and soft hackles, as well as side-drifted yarn, soft beads, or small bait-sized presentations. For gear anglers, drift fishing small clusters or beads, and side-drifting from a drift boat are consistent producers. For trout, nymphing with stoneflies, mayfly nymphs, and caddis pupa under indicators is reliable, with dry-dropper rigs effective in summer when flows drop. Light spinning outfits with small spinners, spoons, and 1/16โ€“1/8 oz marabou jigs also score well.

On the lakes near Ashland, trolling is a staple. For trout and kokanee, pull small spoons, wedding rings, or hoochies behind dodgers at 1โ€“1.6 mph, adjusting depth to where you mark fish on sonar or see surface activity. For bass, work soft plastics, tubes, and jerkbaits along rocky structure and timber, moving shallower during low-light windows and deeper as the sun climbs. In warm months, topwater poppers and walking baits can be excellent at dawn and dusk, especially around weedlines and flooded brush.

Tactical tips for Ashland-area waters revolve around clarity and flow. After storms, lean on larger, darker patterns, heavier presentations, and slower drifts in softer water. When the Rogue is clear, drop leader diameters, downsize lures and flies, and fish early or late to avoid boat traffic and bright sun. Wind can be a factor on the exposed reservoirs; plan to launch early, fish windward banks where food is pushed in, and use a drift sock or electric motor to maintain controlled drifts. Waders and layered clothing are essential much of the year, as mornings can be cold even in summer at higher-elevation lakes.

Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes.
