Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Athens
Fishing in Athens, Texas revolves around Lake Athens and a network of nearby East Texas reservoirs and ponds that consistently produce quality largemouth bass, slab crappie, and cooperative catfish. Clear water, abundant aquatic vegetation, and a warm climate create prime conditions for year-round fishing, especially for anglers who understand seasonal patterns and how bass and panfish use grass lines, docks, and structure.
Seasonal patterns on Lake Athens are classic East Texas. In late winter and early spring, bass stage on secondary points, channel swings, and the first breaks outside spawning pockets. Slow-rolled spinnerbaits, suspending jerkbaits, and Carolina rigs along 8–12 feet of water are reliable. As water temperatures reach the 60s, bass move shallow to spawn in protected coves; weightless soft jerkbaits, Texas-rigged creature baits, and wacky-rigged stick worms sight-fished around beds and shallow grass excel.
By summer, much of the bass population shifts to offshore humps, points, and deeper edges of hydrilla and coontail. Early and late, work topwaters such as walking baits or frogs over grass and around docks. Once the sun gets high, probe the deeper grasslines and channel breaks with football jigs, deep-diving crankbaits, and big worms. In fall, shad move shallow into creeks and pockets, pulling bass to windblown banks; reaction baits like lipless crankbaits, small swimbaits, and spinnerbaits become dominant producers.
Habitat and structure are a major strength for Athens-area lakes. Look for healthy submerged vegetation, dock pilings, riprap at bridge crossings, and brush piles placed off points and creek channels. Clearer water than many Texas lakes makes stealth and line choice important: downsizing to 10–12 lb fluorocarbon for finesse plastics often increases bites, especially on sunny, calm days. When water is stained after a rain, you can push closer to cover and use heavier line, bulky jigs, and louder crankbaits.
Crappie and panfish fishing is excellent much of the year. In spring, target crappie in shallow coves, flooded brush, and along riprap with small jigs under a fixed float or live minnows. Through summer and into winter, they pull out to timber, bridge pilings, and brush piles in 12–25 feet. A slow, vertical presentation with 1/16–1/8 oz jigs is key; experiment with color until you match the mood of the fish. Bluegill and redear sunfish hold around docks, grass edges, and laydowns—perfect for simple float rigs with worms or small pieces of nightcrawler, especially popular with family anglers.
Catfish round out the Athens-area options. Channel and blue catfish relate to creek channels, points, and windblown banks where baitfish and shad concentrate. Stink baits, punch baits, cut shad, or chicken-based baits fished on slip rigs or Carolina rigs put fish in the boat. Focus on ledges where 8–15 feet drops into deeper water, especially during summer when current or wind pushes forage along these edges.
For tactical tips, pay close attention to water clarity and wind direction. In clearer conditions, make long casts, use natural colors, and prioritize quieter presentations. Wind can be your friend: work windblown banks and points with faster-moving baits to find active fish. Electronics help you line up offshore structure, but even without them, systematically fan-casting points, creek mouths, and visible edges of vegetation will keep you on fish around Athens, Texas.
