Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 10:46 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

Next New Moon in ~16 days on 9th November
Full Moon is generally a productive time for fishing - especially night fishing. Bright nights mean that many predators feed more actively during the night. During full moon the gravitational pull is in line with the gravitational pull of the sun, affecting all wildlife and increasing feeding behaviour.
  • Distance to earth:
    380,340 km
    Proximity:
    59.5 %
We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Sandusky

Sandusky, Ohio sits on one of the most productive stretches of Lake Erie, with Sandusky Bay and the nearby islands creating prime habitat for a wide range of gamefish. The mix of shallow, weedy bay water, rocky shorelines, man‑made structure, and open-lake reefs gives anglers consistent action from early spring through late fall, with limited but real opportunities in winter when conditions allow.

Seasonal patterns are key around Sandusky. In early spring, as soon as ice is gone, walleye stack along shorelines, near river mouths, and around nearshore reefs. Trolling stickbaits behind planer boards in 10–25 feet of water is a staple, especially after dark. As water warms into late spring and early summer, walleye slide deeper to main-lake basins and reefs off Cedar Point and the Lake Erie islands; trolling crankbaits or spinner harnesses behind inline weights or divers is highly effective. By midsummer, many anglers shift to bottom-bouncing worm harnesses or trolling spoons over suspended fish.

Sandusky Bay itself shines from late spring through early fall. The bay’s warmer, shallower water holds good populations of largemouth bass, channel catfish, sheepshead, white bass, and panfish. Target emergent weeds, marinas, riprap, bridges, and any visible wood. Largemouth respond well to spinnerbaits, bladed jigs, Texas-rigged plastics, and topwater frogs in thicker cover. Channel cats are reliably taken after dark on cut bait or shrimp fished on slip-sinker rigs around drop-offs and channel edges.

Smallmouth bass fishing peaks from late May through October on rocky shorelines, breakwalls, humps, and reefs from the Sandusky harbor out toward the islands. Look for rock transitions and current seams. Tube jigs, ned rigs, drop-shots with goby- or minnow-style plastics, and small crankbaits consistently catch fish. On calm, clear days, downsize line to 6–8 lb fluorocarbon and stay off the structure with long casts to avoid spooking bass in the clear Lake Erie water.

For yellow perch, focus on late summer and fall. Schools often hold near the bottom in 20–40 feet off Sandusky and Cedar Point. Anchor or use a controlled drift and fish double-hook perch spreaders tipped with emerald shiners or minnows close to bottom. Subtle bites are common, so use sensitive rods and keep slack out of the line.

Shore and pier anglers in Sandusky can do well without a boat. Casting crankbaits, jigs, or live minnows from public piers and breakwalls around the harbor and bay can produce walleye, smallmouth, white bass, and drum, especially at dawn, dusk, and into the night. In spring and fall, wind-blown shorelines often concentrate bait and fish; work these areas methodically with jigs and blade baits.

Tactical tips: Pay attention to wind direction on Lake Erie; a steady wind can both position fish and dictate where safe, fishable water will be. Use electronics to locate bait and suspended fish in the open lake, then fine-tune trolling speeds—typically 1.2–2.2 mph depending on lure type. In the bay, cover water quickly with moving baits until you find active fish, then slow down with jigs or soft plastics. Keeping a spread of presentations ready—trolling gear for the main lake, finesse spinning setups for smallmouth, and heavier bait rods for catfish—lets you adapt quickly to the diverse fishing conditions Sandusky offers.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 4 beaches and bays in this area.
