Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Lancaster
Lancaster, PA fishing centers around the powerful Susquehanna River, its tributaries like the Conestoga River and Pequea Creek, and a web of small lakes and ponds that hold bass, catfish, trout, and panfish. The mix of big-river habitat, cool creeks, and still water gives anglers multiple patterns to work year-round.
Seasonal patterns drive success. In early spring, focus on warming shallows and slower current seams. Smallmouth bass on the Susquehanna stage behind boulders, in eddies, and along current breaks; 3–4" tube jigs, hair jigs, and suspending jerkbaits in natural shad or goby colors excel. Stocked trout in local streams fire up as water temps push into the 40s–50s; small inline spinners, 1/16–1/8 oz spoons, and drifted minnows or worms work well in deeper runs and undercut banks.
By late spring and early summer, smallmouth bass spread out across mid-river rock flats and ledges on the Susquehanna near Wrightsville, Columbia, and down toward Safe Harbor. Work crankbaits that tick bottom, Ned rigs, and topwater walkers over shallow boulder fields at dawn and dusk. In local lakes and ponds around Lancaster, largemouth bass shift to weed edges, laydowns, and docks; Texas-rigged soft plastics, swim jigs, and hollow-body frogs are high-percentage options.
Summer brings stable flows and strong warmwater fishing. Night and low-light periods are prime for flathead and channel catfish on the Susquehanna and lower Conestoga River. Target deep holes downstream of islands, bridge pilings, and ledges with live bluegill, cut bait, or large chicken liver balls on heavy gear and slip-sinker rigs. For multispecies action, drift or vertically jig live minnows on 1/8–1/4 oz jigheads along channel drops to pick up walleye, smallmouth, and the occasional striped bass or walleye near dams and deeper runs.
As water cools in fall, fish in Lancaster’s rivers and reservoirs feed heavily. Smallmouth consolidate on main-river ledges and channel edges; use medium-diving crankbaits, football jigs, and blade baits to cover water. In farm ponds and small lakes, bass and crappie key on bait schools—slow-roll underspins and small swimbaits through suspended fish marked on electronics. Panfish stack along deeper weedlines and standing timber; tiny jigs tipped with soft plastics or waxworms consistently produce.
Winter fishing can still be productive on mild days. On the Susquehanna, work slow and low with hair jigs, blade baits, and compact soft plastics in deep wintering holes and slack-water pockets off the main current. In trout streams, nimble presentations with small nymphs, egg patterns, or micro-jigs under floats score in deeper pools where fish concentrate.
Across Lancaster, bank access is a major advantage. Look for bridges with safe pull-offs, public parks along the Conestoga, and shoreline areas below dams on the Susquehanna for consistent current and depth changes. Kayaks and small boats open up mid-river ledges, island cuts, and backwater eddies that see less pressure. Keep tackle simple but versatile—medium spinning outfits with 8–15 lb braid to a fluorocarbon leader and a small box of jigs, plastics, and crankbaits will cover most situations.
