Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Austin
Austin, Texas offers some of the most diverse urban fishing in the state, anchored by the Colorado River chain of lakes: Lake Travis, Lake Austin, and Lady Bird Lake. Clear water, rocky shorelines, submerged timber, and abundant vegetation give anglers options for both numbers and quality fish within minutes of downtown. Understanding seasonal movements and each lake’s character is the key to consistent results.
Spring is prime time for bass fishing around Austin. Largemouth and Guadalupe bass push shallow on Lake Austin and Lady Bird Lake, targeting emerging grass, laydowns, and riprap banks. Weightless soft plastics, wacky-rigged stickbaits, and compact jigs excel around docks and seawalls. On Lake Travis, focus on main-lake pockets and secondary points; fish suspending jerkbaits, swimbaits, and Carolina rigs along the first breaks out from the bank, especially near chunk rock and brush.
Summer patterns revolve around deep structure and low-light windows. On Lake Travis, bass and stripers school over humps, long points, and channel swings. Use electronics to locate bait, then work vertical presentations like dropshots, spoons, and tail spinners beneath the schools. Dawn and dusk are crucial on Lake Austin and Lady Bird Lake; throw topwaters such as walking baits and poppers along weed edges, bridge pilings, and shaded docks, then shift to Texas rigs or jigs once the sun gets high.
Fall brings baitfish migrations and some of the most consistent action of the year. Watch for surface activity as bass push shad to the top on wind-blown points and flats, especially on Travis and Lady Bird Lake. Chasing schooling fish with small swimbaits, lipless crankbaits, and underspins is a highly effective run-and-gun strategy. In the creeks feeding these systems, light spinning gear with small grubs or inline spinners will produce Guadalupe bass, sunfish, and the occasional surprise white bass.
Winter fishing in Austin rewards methodical anglers. Bass hold around steep rock, bluff walls, bridge pilings, and deep timber. Slow down with finesse tactics: dropshot worms, shaky heads, and small football jigs crawled along the bottom. Catfish remain a solid target all winter; anchor on channel bends, ledges, or below inflows and soak cut bait or punch bait near the bottom. Carp and buffalo in Lady Bird Lake are a reliable option for shore anglers using corn or dough baits on simple bottom rigs.
For shore-based and quick-trip fishing, the urban access on Lady Bird Lake and the Colorado River is invaluable. Work around bridges, park shorelines, and visible current seams for bass, sunfish, and carp. Fly anglers can capitalize on clear-water conditions with small streamers, poppers, and nymphs for Guadalupe bass and panfish in creeks and river stretches upstream and downstream of town. Across the region, matching your approach to the lake’s clarity—lighter line and natural colors in clear water, bolder profiles in stained water—will consistently increase your success in the Austin fishing scene.
