Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Bay City
Bay City, Texas fishing revolves around easy access to the lower Colorado River and the Matagorda Bay complex, giving anglers a blend of river, bay, marsh, and surf opportunities. Most saltwater trips stage out of Bay City and run down Highway 60 toward Matagorda, where public ramps put you directly into East and West Matagorda bays, the Colorado River mouth, and nearby beachfront.
Seasonal patterns are predictable. In spring, warming water pushes bait and trout onto shallow shorelines and mid-bay reefs. Wade fishing with soft plastics on 1/8–1/16 oz jigheads, MirrOlure-style twitchbaits, and topwaters around dawn is productive on windward banks where mud and shell mix. Redfish school in back lakes and marsh drains; a gold spoon or 3–4 inch paddle tail swimbait worked along the edges of flooded grass is a reliable search bait.
Summer in the Bay City–Matagorda area means early starts. Speckled trout slide to deeper reefs, channels, and the surf. Focus on the first and second guts along Matagorda Beach when the water is green, throwing topwaters at first light and switching to live shrimp or croaker under popping corks once the sun climbs. Redfish prowl jetties, channel edges, and marsh drains; soak cracked blue crab, mullet, or live shrimp on a Carolina rig in current breaks and eddies.
Fall is the premier time for Bay City redfish and trout. Northers stack bait at the mouths of drains and along the Colorado River and ICW. Look for bird activity over slicks and nervous bait in East and West Matagorda Bay. Soft plastics in natural hues, slow-rolled along shell and drop-offs, excel. Flounder concentrate near passes, ship channels, and marsh mouths; drag a Gulp! shrimp or curl-tail grub slowly along bottom, or use live mud minnows on a light fish-finder rig.
Winter fishing is about timing fronts. On warming trends after a cold blast, target mud and shell in knee- to thigh-deep water where trout and redfish slide shallow to warm. Corkies and suspending jerkbaits fished with long pauses draw strikes from larger trout. On the Colorado River near Bay City, deeper outside bends, bridge pilings, and barge canals hold catfish and occasional bass; use cut shad or punch bait for blue and channel catfish on simple slip-sinker rigs.
Key habitats and techniques include bay reefs, marsh lakes, and river structure. In the bays, drift fishing over shell with a drift sock allows you to cover water; fan-cast plastics or live shrimp under corks, adjusting leader length to keep baits just above the shell. In marshes and back lakes, pole or use the trolling motor to quietly work shorelines, sight-casting to redfish pushing wakes or tailing in skinny water.
Tactically, pay close attention to wind and tides. In this area, a strong southeast wind can dirty West Bay but push bait into protected shorelines and coves; fish the cleaner edges of off-colored water. Productive lures include 1/8 oz jigheads with 3–5 inch plastics in pumpkinseed, opening night, or bone, quarter-ounce gold spoons, and medium-sized topwaters in bone, chrome/black, and chartreuse. Keep leaders around 20–30 lb fluorocarbon to handle shell and the occasional jack or shark in the surf.
For anglers launching from Bay City with limited time, the lower Colorado River and nearby channels are efficient options. Work current seams, riprap, and pilings with jigs tipped with shrimp, or free-line live bait around structure. With a flexible plan that follows seasons, tides, and water clarity, the Bay City–Matagorda corridor delivers consistent action for both inshore and nearshore anglers.
