Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 14:19 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

Next New Moon in ~13 days on 14th July
Full Moon is generally a productive time for fishing - especially night fishing. Bright nights mean that many predators feed more actively during the night. During full moon the gravitational pull is in line with the gravitational pull of the sun, affecting all wildlife and increasing feeding behaviour.
  • Distance to earth:
    400,943 km
    Proximity:
    11.2 %
We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Dallas

Dallas fishing revolves around a network of large reservoirs such as Lake Ray Hubbard to the east, Lewisville Lake and Grapevine Lake to the northwest, and Lake Ray Roberts a bit farther north. Smaller urban lakes like White Rock Lake and community ponds scattered around the metroplex give bank anglers plenty of options close to town. Most water bodies are classic North Texas impoundments: stained water, abundant shad, scattered timber, riprap, and man-made structure.

Seasonal patterns drive success. In late winter and early spring, largemouth bass and crappie stage on creek channels, secondary points, and bridge pilings. Slow-rolled spinnerbaits, lipless crankbaits, and jigs work around rocky points on Ray Hubbard and Lewisville. For crappie, target submerged timber and vertical structure with small jigs or minnows, focusing on 10–20 feet of water until fish move shallow to spawn. As water warms into the 60s, bass flood shallow flats, boat docks, and protected coves; weightless soft plastics, Texas rigs, and shallow square-bill crankbaits excel during this period.

From late spring through early fall, baitfish-driven patterns dominate. Dawn and dusk are prime times to chase white bass and hybrid striped bass schooling on main-lake points and mid-lake humps on Ray Hubbard, Lewisville, and Ray Roberts. Watch for birds and surface activity, then cast chrome slabs, spoons, or small swimbaits through the blitz. Midday, fish often slide deeper to 20–35 feet, where vertical jigging with slabs or dropping live shad can be extremely effective.

Catfish are a year-round option across the Dallas area. Blue and channel catfish stack along river channels, ledges, and windblown points. In warmer months, punch bait, prepared stink baits, and cut shad fished on slip rigs produce steady action; focus on windward shorelines where scent disperses quickly. For larger blue cats, drift cut shad across flats adjacent to creek channels on Lewisville or Ray Roberts, adjusting weight so baits tick bottom without snagging constantly.

Urban and small-water anglers can score in places like White Rock Lake, Lake Carolyn, and numerous park ponds. These waters hold bass, sunfish, carp, and stocked catfish. Light spinning tackle, 6–8 lb test, and finesse presentations are ideal. Try wacky-rigged stick worms around riprap and docks for bass, small pieces of nightcrawler under a float for bluegill, and simple hair jigs or micro-crankbaits along edges of vegetation.

Tactically, success around Dallas often hinges on reading wind, water clarity, and structure:

  • Windy banks: In stained lakes like Ray Hubbard and Lewisville, windblown shorelines concentrate bait. Use moving baits (spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, crankbaits) and cover water aggressively.
  • Vertical structure: For crappie and schooling species, prioritize bridge pilings, standing timber, and brush piles. Present baits vertically and stay over the fish using electronics or careful boat positioning.
  • Color and vibration: In typical off-colored water, choose loud profiles and chartreuse/white or dark silhouettes. In clearer lakes or after long dry spells, downsize line and switch to more natural shad and green pumpkin patterns.
  • Time of day: In hot North Texas summers, fish shallow early and late, then move progressively deeper as the sun rises. Night fishing with cut bait or live bait can be extremely productive for catfish and bass around lighted marinas.

With multiple major lakes less than an hour from downtown and endless bank-fishing spots, the Dallas area offers consistent opportunities for bass, crappie, catfish, and schooling gamefish if you follow seasonal movements and match your approach to the conditions.

The Best Fishing Spots around Dallas

Lewisville Lake

One of North Texas’s busiest fisheries, Lewisville Lake produces largemouth bass, strong spring runs of white bass, and year-round blue and channel catfish, with crappie tight to bridges and timber. Windblown points and humps shine for schooling sandies in summer, while winter jigging near creek channels can be lights-out. It’s a big-water option close to Dallas, with ample ramps and shoreline access around The Colony and Hickory Creek.

Grapevine Lake

Grapevine Lake offers classic structure fishing for largemouth bass, strong spring and summer bites for white bass, and dependable crappie around brush and docks. The rocky points, dam area, and mid-lake humps produce schooling fish, while catfishing is steady on channels and flats. With clear water and convenient parks, it’s a favorite for finesse tactics and family outings.

Joe Pool Lake

Joe Pool Lake shines for crappie around brush piles and marinas, consistent largemouth bass along flooded timber and grass edges, and reliable catfish on points and creek mouths. Spring and early summer bring strong shallow bites, with summer nights ideal for catfish. Its state park access and ample ramps make it a high-traffic, high-reward option south of Dallas.

White Rock Lake

A classic in-city fishery, White Rock Lake offers bank-friendly access to largemouth bass, seasonal runs of white bass from feeder creeks, plentiful channel catfish, and urban carp. Riprap, piers, and creek mouths are prime spots, with spring and fall the most consistent. It’s ideal for walkers, cyclists, and anglers looking for quick sessions near downtown Dallas.

Ray Roberts Lake

Ray Roberts Lake is known for quality largemouth bass, strong crappie around timber and standing brush, and dependable white bass over main-lake structure. Clearer water favors finesse and sight-oriented tactics, while catfish roam channels and points. It’s a less urban, scenic option compared to Lewisville Lake with excellent state park access.

Lake Tawakoni

Renowned as a catfish powerhouse, Lake Tawakoni produces trophy blue catfish, plus prolific hybrid striped bass, white bass, and solid crappie. Winter drifting for blues and summer schooling for hybrids are hallmarks, with timber and brush also holding fish. Though a bit farther east, it’s a destination lake for anglers across North Texas.

Lavon Lake

Lavon Lake features strong spring white bass runs, ample crappie around bridges and brush, and year-round blue and channel catfish. Shallow flats, creek arms, and riprap produce in warm months, while winter fish stack on deeper structure. It’s a consistent performer that often fishes similarly to Lake Ray Hubbard but with slightly lighter crowds.

Trinity River

The Trinity River through Dallas offers urban access to blue and channel catfish, seasonal runs of white bass from tributaries, and occasional largemouth bass in slower pools. Bridges, bends, and confluences concentrate fish, with cut bait and live bait producing consistently. Kayak-friendly stretches and bank pull-offs make it a versatile city option.

Bachman Lake

Close to Love Field, Bachman Lake is a quick-hit urban spot for largemouth bass, channel catfish, and crappie around piers, aerators, and riprap. Early and late light windows often see bass feeding shallow, while catfish take prepared baits near drop-offs. It’s a compact, walkable lake that rewards stealthy presentations and frequent moves.
