Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Del Rio
Del Rio fishing is dominated by Lake Amistad, a massive Rio Grande impoundment known for clear water, deep structure, and strong populations of largemouth and smallmouth bass. The lake’s canyon walls, flooded timber, and expansive points create textbook structure that fishes differently with each season and water level. Add in stripers, catfish, and panfish and you have a year-round fishery with diverse options.
Spring is prime time for bass on Lake Amistad. As water temperatures push into the 60s, largemouth and smallmouth move from main-lake points into protected pockets and creek arms. Look for spawning activity on gently sloping gravel and clay banks with any scattered brush or rock. Soft plastics—Texas-rigged creature baits, weightless flukes, and wacky-rigged stickbaits—excel in the clear water. Downsizing line to 10–12 lb fluoro and making long casts is critical when the lake is at its clearest.
In summer, Del Rio anglers focus on offshore structure. Main-lake humps, long tapering points, and submerged roadbeds hold schooling bass and white bass. Electronics are key; idle until you mark bait and arcs off the bottom, then drop-shot finesse worms or yo-yo deep-diving crankbaits and spoons through the school. Early and late, work topwaters—walking baits and poppers—over points and along bluff edges where shad get pushed to the surface. Night fishing with Texas-rigged worms along rocky banks can be exceptionally productive when the sun drives fish deep during the day.
Fall brings bait to the backs of creeks and into windblown pockets, and the predator species follow. Cover water with shad-imitating crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and small swimbaits in the upper ends of arms and around flooded brush. This is one of the best times for numbers of bass, white bass, and schooling stripers chasing shad on the surface. Keep a topwater or small spoon rigged at all times to fire into breaking fish that erupt suddenly in open water.
During winter, concentrate on steep rocky banks, channel swings, and deep ledges near the main river. Jigs, football heads, and blade baits worked slowly on bottom produce quality largemouth and smallmouth. Stripers and white bass often stack along the old river channel; vertical jigging spoons or heavy jigs directly under the boat is a reliable pattern when the water is cold and clear.
Catfish anglers around Del Rio do well year-round by targeting ledges, channel bends, and flats adjacent to deep water. Channel cats respond to punch baits, prepared stink baits, and cut shad fished on slip rigs, while bigger blue and flathead catfish favor live or fresh-cut bait on heavier tackle. For panfish, focus on marina docks, brush piles, and protected coves; small jigs and worms under a float produce bluegill, redear, and occasional crappie, especially in late spring and early summer.
Clear water, fluctuating levels, and desert winds define Lake Amistad fishing. Long casts, natural colors, and light line consistently outperform heavy, flashy setups. Use your electronics to find structure and bait, then adjust lure depth and speed to match the season. Whether you’re chasing trophy bass along sheer rock walls or schooling stripers in open water, Del Rio offers a technical but rewarding fishery that favors anglers who pay attention to detail.
