Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 13:50 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Laredo

Fishing in Laredo, Texas revolves around the Rio Grande and nearby Falcon Lake, a sprawling reservoir famous for big bass and catfish. The semiarid South Texas climate keeps water temperatures high for much of the year, creating long growing seasons and fast fish growth. Anglers can mix river and lake fishing, bank and boat access, and both live bait and artificial presentations to stay on fish 12 months a year.

Seasonal patterns in the Laredo area are defined more by water level and heat than by drastic temperature swings. From late winter into early spring, largemouth bass push shallow along flooded brush, rock ledges, and minor creek arms; this is prime time for soft plastics, spinnerbaits, and jigs crawled slowly around cover. By late spring and summer, bass and catfish hold on deeper ledges, channel swings, and points, especially where the main Rio Grande channel snakes close to shore. Summer days can be brutal, so many anglers focus on low-light windows at dawn, dusk, or after dark, when catfish, gar, and bass feed aggressively along edges and flats. Fall brings some of the most comfortable fishing of the year, with schooling bass and white bass chasing shad on main-lake points and river bends.

The main habitat types are the rocky Rio Grande channel, flooded mesquite and brush, riprap banks around bridges and launches, and shallow flats with scattered timber. In the river stretches near Laredo, current seams, small eddies behind boulders, and protected cuts hold catfish and panfish. Any irregularity in current—logjams, washouts, bridge pilings—is worth a few casts. On Falcon Lake, submerged brush lines, stump fields, and rock piles on points are consistent bass producers. Catfish stack along channel ledges, particularly where a sharp break meets a flat or where wind pushes waves into a bank, stirring up food.

Common techniques are straightforward and effective. For largemouth bass, Texas-rigged worms and creature baits in dark or natural hues excel around brush and timber; pair them with heavy line to winch fish out of thick cover. Crankbaits and lipless cranks cover water fast along rocky points and riprap, especially on breezy days. In deeper summer and winter patterns, Carolina rigs and football jigs slowly dragged along bottom are productive. Catfish specialists rely on cut shad, stink baits, and chicken liver fished on slip sinker rigs; anchor upstream of drop-offs or current breaks and fan-cast baits to locate active fish.

Tactical tips for Laredo revolve around heat management, water clarity, and level changes. In clear to moderately stained water, downsize line and lures and focus on early and late low-light periods for more surface activity and shallow movement. In wind-stained or rising water conditions, move shallow and target newly flooded brush and shoreline grass, where bass and catfish roam searching for disoriented bait. Always note wind direction; in this region, windblown banks typically outproduce calm ones, especially for bass and schooling white bass following baitfish. For bank anglers, concentrate on access points where the river or lake channel swings close to shore—bridges, bluff banks, and marinas give you deeper water within casting range and steady action throughout the year.

The Best Fishing Spots around Laredo

Lake Casa Blanca

Inside Laredo, Lake Casa Blanca offers convenient access to largemouth bass, channel and blue catfish, and seasonal sunfish and crappie. Bass relate to rocky shorelines, riprap, and submerged brush, with spring and fall providing the best shallow bite; summer and winter push fish to deeper structure near the dam. Shorelines and ramps within the surrounding park make it a quick-hit option compared to longer trips to Falcon International Reservoir.

Rio Grande

Flowing along Laredo, the Rio Grande yields blue, channel, and flathead catfish, plus carp and occasional gar. Deep bends, eddies behind structure, and confluences with local creeks shine, with nighttime catfish action strong in warm months. Small boats and kayaks work eddies and current seams, while accessible banks near town bridges and parks offer shore opportunities, and it pairs well with trips to Lake Casa Blanca.

Falcon State Park

A prime access hub on the southeast shore of Falcon International Reservoir, Falcon State Park provides boat ramps, shoreline, and coves that hold largemouth bass, white bass, and catfish. Work wind-blown points and flooded mesquite during spring; troll or jig for whites in summer; and bait fish deeper channel edges for cats year-round. It’s a reliable launch-and-fish base with sheltered areas when lake winds pick up.

Falcon Dam

Near the south end of Falcon International Reservoir, Falcon Dam areas concentrate gamefish along riprap, current seams, and depth breaks, producing largemouth bass, white bass, and catfish. Crankbaits and jigs along rocks excel in spring and fall; summer sees deeper presentations off the face and adjacent points. Shoreline spots and nearby ramps give anglers multiple angles to fish the structure-rich zone.

San Ygnacio

This historic village on the Rio Grande upstream of Falcon International Reservoir offers accessible banks, eddies, and deep bends that hold blue and channel catfish, with incidental gar and carp. Evening and nighttime bites are productive in warm months, while slower current pockets fish well year-round. Shore anglers target cut banks and submerged timber visible at moderate flows.

Zapata

The town of Zapata sits on the eastern shore of Falcon International Reservoir and serves as a central launch and bank-fishing area for largemouth bass, white bass, and catfish. Nearby points, submerged roadbeds, and the Veleno arm produce through the seasons—jerkbaits and lipless cranks in spring, deep cranks and Texas rigs in summer, and slow-rolled presentations in winter from shore-accessible spots and ramps.

El Cenizo

South of Laredo on the Rio Grande, El Cenizo provides shoreline access to bends and slack-water pockets that commonly hold channel and blue catfish, with bycatch of carp and gar. Warm-season evenings are productive with cut bait and stink bait, while cooler months reward patient fishing in deeper holes. It’s a convenient add-on to urban sessions at Lake Casa Blanca or downtown stretches of the Rio Grande.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes.
