Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Lufkin
Lufkin, Texas anchors a prime freshwater fishing region, with Sam Rayburn Reservoir just to the east, Lake Nacogdoches and Kurth Lake close by, and a web of creeks, ponds, and timbered backwaters. The area is dominated by East Texas reservoirs with flooded timber, creek channels, points, and shallow grass, giving bass, crappie, and catfish anglers a wide range of patterns to work.
Seasonal patterns are key around Lufkin. In late winter and early spring, prespawn largemouth bass concentrate along creek channels, secondary points, and staging spots near spawning coves. Use lipless crankbaits, suspending jerkbaits, and Carolina rigs along channel swings and timber edges. As water warms into the 60s, bass move shallow to spawn on hard-bottom flats, shallow pockets, and protected coves; sight-fishing with soft stickbaits, creature baits, and finesse jigs in clear pockets can be productive.
By summer, Lufkin-area bass often split between deep and shallow programs. On Sam Rayburn and similar lakes, many fish set up on offshore structure—humps, roadbeds, long points, and channel bends in 12–25 feet. Deep-diving crankbaits, football jigs, and big worms excel here, especially when bass are grouped on brush or shell. At the same time, a reliable shallow bite exists around shaded wood, docks, and grass; topwaters at dawn, followed by Texas-rigged plastics and spinnerbaits, work well. In fall, shad migrate into creeks and pockets, pulling bass with them. Cover water quickly with squarebills, small swimbaits, and buzzbaits in the backs of creeks and around laydowns.
Crappie fishing is a major draw near Lufkin, especially on larger reservoirs loaded with brush and timber. In spring, crappie flood the banks, spawning in 2–6 feet of water around flooded brush, reeds, and shallow timber. Casting small tube jigs or minnows under a slip float is effective. Postspawn through summer, crappie stack on brush piles, bridge pilings, and timber in 10–25 feet. Vertical jigging with light line, or slowly tight-lining minnows over marked brush, consistently puts slabs in the boat.
Catfish provide steady action year-round. Channel and blue catfish are common in creek channels, flats adjacent to river channels, and windblown shorelines where baitfish and debris collect. In warm months, anchor or drift cut bait, shrimp, or prepared baits across flats and points. After fronts or in cooler water, target deeper channel holes, ledges, and timber with fresh cut shad or panfish. Flatheads prefer live bait and heavy cover; focus on logjams and steep breaks at night.
Practical tactics for the Lufkin area include:
- Use electronics to locate offshore structure, brush piles, and crappie schools on big reservoirs.
- Downsize baits and slow presentations during cold fronts; fish tighter to timber and channel swings.
- In stained water, favor darker soft plastics and noisy crankbaits; in clearer pockets, use natural shad or green pumpkin tones.
- Take advantage of early and late low-light periods for topwater bass action along grass edges and shallow wood.
With its mix of big reservoirs and smaller local waters, the Lufkin region rewards anglers who adapt to seasonal movements and take time to pattern fish around timber, channels, and baitfish. Whether you’re chasing trophy largemouth, filling a cooler with crappie, or soaking bait for catfish, the waters around Lufkin offer consistent, varied fishing opportunities throughout the year.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 4 beaches and bays in this area.
