Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 12:56 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Rio Grande City

Rio Grande City, Texas offers a distinct river fishing experience along the lower Rio Grande, where fluctuating flows, shifting sandbars, and hard-to-reach structure create both challenges and big rewards. Most angling centers on current seams, deep outside bends, rock banks, and woody cover near the main channel, with boat, kayak, and shore access depending on water levels and recent rain.

Seasonally, late winter through spring is prime for largemouth bass, spotted bass, and white bass. As water warms, bass slide out of winter holes and stage along drop-offs, brush piles, and flooded brush lines. In early spring, target calmer eddies just off the main current with Texas-rigged creature baits, compact jigs, and small crankbaits in natural shad or green pumpkin colors. During the spawn and immediate post-spawn, work gently sloping banks, side channels, and backwaters with weightless soft plastics and small spinnerbaits; focus on any isolated laydown, root wad, or stretch of riprap.

From late spring through early fall, the river’s catfish and gar shine. Channel and blue catfish stack in deeper holes on outside bends, below shallow riffles, and around submerged timber. A simple bottom rig with cut shad, skipjack, or prepared stink bait will produce, especially at night or during low-light windows. For flathead catfish, step up to heavier tackle and present live sunfish or small carp along undercut banks and heavy brush; flatheads prefer strong current edges with solid overhead cover.

Alligator, longnose, and spotted gar are iconic along this stretch. Look for them rolling or sunning in slack pockets near the main flow. Free-line or lightly weight a live or cut baitfish under a float, set just off the bottom or mid-depth, and give the fish time before driving the hook. Wire leaders are helpful around the bigger gar, and a long-handled net or gripper makes landings safer.

Panfish and rough fish round out the Rio Grande City fishery. Bluegill, redear, and green sunfish gather around rocks, brush, and shaded banks—ideal for light spinning tackle, small hooks, and worms, crickets, or tiny jigs. Common carp, smallmouth buffalo, and freshwater drum can be sight-fished along calmer shorelines and sand flats with dough baits, corn, or small soft plastics crawled along bottom. These species provide steady action when predator bites slow.

Fishing tactics must adjust to river conditions. After heavy rain and rising water, the river usually muddies and fish push tight to the bank or into side eddies to escape the strongest flow. In these conditions, use larger, darker baits and strong scent—bulky jigs, black-blue plastics, and pungent catfish baits. On stable or clearing water, downsize line and presentations, and key on subtle current breaks: behind boulders, logjams, and small points that create soft spots in the flow.

Boat and kayak anglers have the advantage of covering multiple bends and depth changes, but shore anglers can do well by walking stretches of accessible bank and concentrating on visible transitions—rock to sand, fast to slow water, and shade lines from overhanging trees. Use heavier sinkers than you think you need to hold bottom in current, keep rigs simple and snag-resistant, and always reposition until you contact fish: in a dynamic river like the Rio Grande near Rio Grande City, small moves often unlock the bite.
