Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 13:12 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Sulphur Springs

Fishing around Sulphur Springs, Texas revolves around a mix of small private ponds, community lakes, and especially nearby Cooper Lake (also known as Jim Chapman Lake), about 15–20 minutes north of town. This East Texas setting offers classic warmwater fishing for largemouth bass, crappie, channel and blue catfish, plus plentiful bluegill and redear sunfish that keep rods bending all year.

Seasonal patterns are straightforward but important. In late winter and early spring, prespawn largemouth bass stage on main-lake points, creek-channel bends, and the first break outside coves. Slowly worked suspending jerkbaits, lipless crankbaits, and Carolina-rigged soft plastics shine now. As water temperatures push into the 60s, bass move shallow to grass edges, buckbrush, and protected pockets to spawn; weightless soft stickbaits, Texas-rigged creature baits, and light jigs pitched tight to cover are the go-to presentations.

Crappie fishing near Sulphur Springs peaks in spring when fish flood the banks to spawn around flooded brush, reeds, and boat docks. A small tube jig or marabou jig under a fixed float, set 1–3 feet deep, is deadly when slowly pulled past visible cover. Through summer and early fall, crappie slide back to brush piles, submerged timber, and bridge pilings in 10–20 feet of water. Vertical jigging with 1/16–1/8 oz jigs or dropping live minnows directly into the structure produces consistently.

Catfish are a major draw in the Sulphur Springs area. Channel and blue catfish bite well from late spring through fall, especially on windblown points, shallow flats with a mud or clay bottom, and along creek channels. Punch bait, stink bait, and prepared dip baits on slip rigs or simple bottom rigs work great for numbers of channels. For larger blues, use fresh cut shad, sunfish, or other fresh cut bait on 3/0–6/0 circle hooks, focusing on deeper ledges, river-channel bends, and main-lake humps.

Habitat and structure around Sulphur Springs includes flooded timber, brush, scattered rock, riprap along bridges and ramps, and patches of aquatic vegetation where available. In stained East Texas water, bass often hold tight to isolated cover. Casting parallel to visible cover and making multiple casts from different angles is more effective than constantly moving. When fishing small ponds and stock tanks, work the dam, any visible brush piles, and the windblown bank first; these areas concentrate bass and catfish looking for ambush points and incoming food.

Techniques and tactical tips for this region favor simple, proven setups:

  • Bass: Medium-heavy baitcasting gear with 12–17 lb fluorocarbon covers Texas-rigged worms, jigs, and spinnerbaits. In muddy or windy conditions, upsize to 17–20 lb mono or fluoro and use louder, bulkier lures like chatterbaits and big Colorado-blade spinnerbaits.
  • Crappie: Light spinning gear with 4–8 lb mono and 1/16 oz jigs is ideal. Change jig colors frequently—chartreuse, black, white, and natural shad patterns cover most water clarities.
  • Catfish: Medium to medium-heavy rods with 15–30 lb mono or braid and abrasion-resistant leaders handle both channels and blues. Use a slip-sinker rig so catfish can pick up the bait without feeling heavy resistance.
  • Sunfish: For kids and beginners, a bobber and small hook tipped with worms or crickets around docks, grass edges, and shallow laydowns near Sulphur Springs’ ponds and small lakes is nearly foolproof.

Wind direction matters on area lakes: fish the windblown banks and points when it’s safe, as baitfish stack there and draw in bass, catfish, and white bass. Always pay attention to water color and clarity—darker water calls for slower, noisier lures and strong scent, while clearer water rewards more natural presentations and lighter line.
