Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 14:9 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. Fishing Overview Waco

Waco, Texas offers diverse freshwater fishing anchored by Lake Waco and the Brazos River, plus numerous city lakes and park ponds that are easy to reach before or after work. Anglers can target everything from bass and crappie to catfish and hybrid stripers, with reliable bank access and several launch ramps for boats and kayaks.

Seasonal patterns around Waco revolve largely around water temperature. In late winter and early spring, bass, crappie, and sunfish push into the backs of creeks feeding Lake Waco and the slower coves along the Brazos. This is prime time for shallow crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and Texas-rigged soft plastics pitched to flooded brush and boat docks. Crappie stack on brush piles and bridge pilings; 1/16–1/8 oz jigs in chartreuse, white, or natural shad patterns are consistent producers.

As temperatures climb into late spring and early summer, bass slide to main-lake points, submerged timber, and rock. Early and late in the day, topwaters—walking baits and poppers—can be excellent on Lake Waco’s wind-blown points and riprap near the dam. Midday, switch to Carolina rigs, shaky heads, or deep-diving crankbaits along offshore humps and channel swings. White bass and hybrid striper action picks up on the Brazos and open-water sections of Lake Waco; look for schooling fish chasing shad and cast small spoons or swimbaits into the surface activity.

In summer, heat pushes much of the action to low-light periods. Night fishing near bridges and lighted docks on Lake Waco can be outstanding for crappie and channel catfish. For catfish, focus on ledges and channel edges with punch bait, cut shad, or chicken-based baits on slip rigs. On the Brazos, target deeper bends, undercut banks, and current breaks behind laydowns using live or cut bait for blue and flathead catfish. Kayak anglers often work upstream from local access points, then drift back while fishing eddies and seams with live bait or heavy jigs.

During fall, cooling water brings baitfish shallow again. This is one of the best times for numbers of bass on Lake Waco; concentrate on the backs of creeks and secondary points with square-bill crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and bladed jigs. White bass and hybrids frequently push shad to the surface in open water—keep a medium spinning combo rigged with a small chrome spoon or 3–4 inch soft jerkbait ready to throw at schooling fish.

Key habitat types around Waco include rocky riprap near bridges and dams, flooded timber on Lake Waco, creek channels, and man‑made brush piles. City lakes and park ponds often have mowed banks and scattered cattails or brush, perfect for beginner-friendly bobber rigs with worms for bluegill and small bass. In the Brazos River, focus on seams where fast water meets slow, the downstream side of islands, and deeper holes below shoals.

For practical tactics, use medium to medium-heavy baitcasting gear (12–17 lb mono or fluoro) for bass and hybrids, and heavier setups (20–30 lb mono or braid) for catfish on the river. On pressured lakes, downsize line and lures, and make longer casts. Wind often positions fish on the wind-blown side of points and banks, especially when it stacks shad. Electronics help on Lake Waco to locate offshore brush and bait clouds, but simple strategies—moving frequently, changing lure speeds, and rotating between shallow and deep targets—consistently pay off for anglers fishing the Waco area.
