Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Lynchburg
Fishing in Lynchburg, VA centers on the James River and a network of nearby lakes, offering varied water types within a short drive. The James through Lynchburg is classic smallmouth water—rocky ledges, current seams, and deep bends—while smaller reservoirs and ponds around town target largemouth, crappie, and panfish. Anglers can work everything from fast-moving current to quiet backwaters in a single day.
Seasonal patterns drive success. In early spring, focus on warming shallows and eddies on the James River. Smallmouth and spotted bass slide up onto gravel bars and the downstream sides of current breaks; 3–4 inch soft-plastic grubs, tube baits, and small craw-pattern crankbaits perform well. In lakes and ponds, prespawn largemouth stack along channel swings, secondary points, and riprap; slowly rolled spinnerbaits, suspending jerkbaits, and lipless cranks are high-percentage choices.
By late spring and early summer, the James around Lynchburg fishes best at first and last light. Work topwater walkers and poppers over mid-river rock and near islands, then switch to bottom-contact baits—3/8 oz jigs, Ned rigs, and finesse worms—once the sun is high. Reservoir bass push to weed edges, laydowns, and docks; Texas-rigged plastics and wacky-rigged stickbaits are reliable. Crappie hold to brush piles and standing timber; count down small jigs under a fixed or slip float to stay over the school.
Summer patterns hinge on shade and current. On the river, smallmouth slide into faster oxygenated runs and the heads of pools. Target inches from the current seam with compact 1/8–1/4 oz jigs, small swimbaits, and inline spinners. Night fishing can be excellent for channel and flathead catfish—anchor above deep outside bends, ledges, or the base of riffles and soak cut bait, live bluegill, or chicken liver on slip-sinker rigs.
In fall, baitfish move shallow and so do gamefish. Work shallow points and flats adjacent to deeper water with squarebill crankbaits, small spinnerbaits, and bladed jigs. On the James, look for smallmouth keying on bait in slow pools below riffles; match the profile with shad-colored cranks or 3-inch swimbaits. Carp and gar are common in slack stretches—freeline bread, corn, or small shad where you see rolling or tailing fish.
Winter fishing around Lynchburg is about slowing down. On stable weather windows, smallmouth pile into the deepest pools and along vertical rock. Present hair jigs, tubes, and small finesse worms with long pauses, keeping contact with the bottom. In still waters, bass often suspend off main-lake points or near dam faces—vertical presentations with jigging spoons or blade baits can trigger strikes.
Habitat and access are straightforward if you read the water. On the James:
- Target current breaks: boulders, bridge pilings, island tips, and laydowns.
- Work seams where fast and slow water meet; these are feeding lanes for bass.
- Probe deep outside bends with heavier jigs or Carolina rigs for mixed bass and catfish.
In local lakes and ponds, prioritize:
- Wood cover (laydowns, brush piles) for largemouth and crappie.
- Weedlines and pad edges early and late with frogs, buzzbaits, and swim jigs.
- Steep banks near the dam in summer and winter for vertical presentations.
Scaling tackle to the environment pays off. Medium-light spinning gear with 6–10 lb line excels for river smallmouth and multi-species action. For heavier cover and bigger catfish or carp, step up to medium-heavy baitcasting or spinning outfits with 15–30 lb line. Keep a compact box of confidence baits—tubes, grubs, small cranks, and a topwater—ready in the car, and Lynchburg’s mix of river and lake fishing will stay productive nearly year-round.
