Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 14:48 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

For fishing, stronger tides are often favourable as they cause stronger currents and more motion on the sea bed. The above tidal coefficients give us an indication of how strong the tides are compared to their average. A value over 90 indicates very strong tides, known as spring tides. A low value indicates weak tides, known as neap tides. The tidal coefficient can range from 20 to 120 with a mean value of 70. A higher number usually indicates better fishing.

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Manassas

Fishing in and around Manassas, Virginia revolves around a mix of small impoundments, community lakes, and the larger Occoquan/Bull Run system that borders Prince William and Fairfax counties. While the city itself is largely suburban, anglers are within a short drive of diverse freshwater options that consistently produce bass, panfish, catfish, and seasonal trout.

Seasonal patterns are critical in these relatively shallow, pressured waters. In early spring, water warms fastest in protected coves, creek arms, and riprap banks. Largemouth bass push shallow around wood and emergent vegetation; small finesse jigs, 4–5 inch soft-plastic worms, and suspending jerkbaits score well. Crappie stack on brush piles and bridge pilings—1/32 to 1/16 oz marabou or tube jigs under a fixed float are reliable. As summer heat sets in, focus on first-light and last-light windows, fishing shade lines, docks, and deeper points. Fall brings another strong bite, with bass and panfish feeding heavily on schools of shad and small minnows along channel edges. Winter calls for downsized baits worked slowly around the deepest structure you can find.

Key habitat types around Manassas include small lakes with defined creek channels, riprap dam faces, stump fields, and scattered laydowns along the banks. Lake-sized waters in the Manassas orbit—like those in private or community developments—often have excellent bass and panfish populations but receive considerable pressure. Nearby Bull Run and the Occoquan system add current seams, rock runs, and subtle eddies where catfish, carp, and the occasional smallmouth hold. In many of the clearer lakes, water color shifts quickly with rain; after a storm, target the incoming creeks where slightly stained water funnels food to waiting fish.

Effective techniques for Manassas-area bass lean toward finesse due to clear water and heavy fishing pressure. Weightless stickbaits, wacky-rigged in green pumpkin or natural shad colors, consistently produce around docks and over submerged grass. Ned rigs with small buoyant plastics excel on gravel points and along riprap. On overcast days or low light, a small buzzbait or popper worked parallel to shoreline grass can draw explosive topwater strikes. For panfish, use light line (2–4 lb test), micro jigs, or simple worm-and-float setups fished tight to cover and drop-offs.

Catfish and carp opportunities are solid in the Manassas corridor, particularly along the Occoquan and its tributaries. Channel and blue catfish respond well to cut bait, chicken liver, or prepared dough baits fished on slip-sinker rigs just off the current edge. Carp are common in slower pools and backwaters; pack-style baits made with sweet corn, oats, or bread fished on simple hair rigs or small hooks produce consistent action for shore anglers.

Trout fishing is available seasonally in stocked streams and select urban impoundments within driveable distance of Manassas. Ultralight spinning rods spooled with 4 lb test, small inline spinners, and salmon-egg style baits work well in these clear, cold stockings. Approach quietly, cast upstream, and let presentations drift naturally through riffles and pockets.

Because many Manassas-area lakes are ringed by homes, parks, and walking paths, stealth and precision matter. Keep tackle compact, favor natural colors, and make long, accurate casts to isolated cover, transition lines, and depth breaks. Focusing on low-light windows, adjusting to seasonal movements, and downsizing presentations are the core tactics that separate consistent Manassas anglers from casual bank fishermen.
