Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 14:45 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

Fishing Overview Beckley

Beckley, West Virginia puts anglers in the middle of some of the best freshwater fishing in the central Appalachians. Within a short drive you can work bass on Bluestone Lake, drift for smallmouth on the famous New River, and wade trout streams in cool mountain hollows. Understanding seasonal patterns and how these fisheries lay out is the key to consistent success.

The New River is the headliner around Beckley, especially for smallmouth bass, rock bass, flathead catfish, and walleye. From spring through fall, focus on current seams, boulder fields, and ledge drops. In spring, smallmouth push shallow to gravel bars and eddies; 3–4 inch soft-plastic grubs, Ned rigs, and small crankbaits work well when bumped along the bottom. Summer calls for low, clear water tactics: light line, natural colors, and precise casts to shade lines, undercut banks, and submerged rock pockets. Early and late, throw topwater walkers and poppers across current breaks and tailouts. In fall, match the crayfish bite with brown and orange jigs worked slowly along ledges.

Bluestone Lake, just south of Beckley, fishes like a classic Appalachian reservoir. Largemouth, smallmouth, hybrid striped bass, crappie, and catfish are prime targets. In spring, target warming coves and flooded bushes with spinnerbaits, lipless crankbaits, and soft-plastic stickbaits for bass. Crappie stack on brush, standing timber, and channel swings; small jigs or minnows under a float excel here. As summer heat sets in, bass and hybrids pull to main-lake points, humps, and the river channel; deep-diving crankbaits, Carolina rigs, and vertical jigging spoons are productive. Night fishing is strong on this lake: slow-dragging cut bait or live bluegills along channel edges and rock walls is a proven tactic for channel and flathead catfish.

Coldwater anglers around Beckley can work trout streams and tailwaters. Clear tributaries and stocked creeks fish best in spring and fall when flows are stable and water is cool. Spin anglers do well with inline spinners, small spoons, and 2–3 inch trout minnows in natural patterns. Fly fishers should carry standard Appalachian patterns: beadhead nymphs, small woolly buggers, and parachute dry flies in muted colors. Stay stealthy—light leaders, long casts, and careful wading pay off on these tight, clear mountain streams.

Sunfish, crappie, and bank options are strong around Beckley for casual and family anglers. Public access points on the New River and shoreline areas of Bluestone Lake host bluegill, rock bass, and crappie around laydowns, riprap, and docks. Simple rigs catch fish: small hooks tipped with worms, crickets, or corn under a float; or 1/32–1/16 oz jigs slowly swum along structure. For bigger fish from shore, target evening and after-dark bites with cut bait on the bottom for catfish or live minnows fished near deeper breaks for walleye.

Year-round, success around Beckley hinges on reading current, structure, and water clarity. Adjust lure size and color to match visibility, downsize and slow down when the water drops and clears, and cover water efficiently when levels are up. Between the New River, Bluestone Lake, and nearby trout streams, the Beckley area offers a diverse, consistently productive fishery for anglers willing to adapt to the seasons.
