Is Drone fishing really cheating? | Category: Fishing Talk

Whenever I tell people that I do a bit of drone fishing, I get mixed responses.

Some think it’s really cool and love the idea of using modern technology to assist in fishing.
It’s fun to have a chat with them and talk about the possibilities and limitations.
They are interested and open to new ideas and want to know how it all works.

But then I also get quite a few that are totally against it and literally hate me when I mention drone fishing.
They usually start telling me that it’s cheating and drones should be banned.
For some reason they love the idea of shooting down drones with a shotgun.
Today I was talking to one of them. We almost got into a fight. ?

I mentioned drone fishing and he got really upset about it.
Then he went on about electric torpedo fishing and how these guys are all plundering the ocean.
And can you believe it - after some more ranting he told me that he's into kite-fishing, LOL ?

I asked him what’s the difference between kite-fishing and drone fishing and he got all upset again.
Telling me how much skill is required to do his kite-fishing and that you need to know about the wind and blah, blah.
He basically told me that if I have to ask what the difference is then I’m too stupid to understand.

I then asked him if he even ever tried to fly a drone (it actually requires some skill).
Of course he would never even dream of trying that.
Flying out his line with a kite was totally fine, but using a drone to get the line out was unacceptable.

So I was wondering - is drone fishing really cheating?

If so, then what about fish finders, kayaks, boats or any other tools to catch fish?
Is only drone fishing cheating and anything else acceptable? But why the hate for drones.
They are just another tool to get the bait out to where the fish are.

Or should we only try to catch fish with our bare hands or ancient gear from now on so that we’re not called cheaters?

I don't think that is cheating. It is a skill to fly the drone.

Once you think you have hooked something, it will take ages to reel in the line from 300m away.

Fishing is a fun activity! I found the drone fishing is great fun.

You need opposing thumbs to fly a drone...Any neanderthal dragging his knuckles on the ground can go fly a kite...and anyone that does not know the difference, is just a knuckle dragging neanderthal and too stupid to understand !!

That is what I would have said...

I have been thinking...It is OK I took 2 aspirin for it

You could get Da Missus (Da Arteest) to design a drone T-shirt..

Then you can say to the knuckle dragging neanderthal - "been there done that, got the T-shirt for it" !!

Drone fishing is just another part of our hobby that we enjoy. It adds a different set of skills and adds to the enjoyment (or frustration) that we all experience. I understand that we are all individuals with different ideas and some hobbies do raise peoples anger (I can't see the fun in shooting an elephant just to get a photo !!!). Some people will always try to spoil your day. Next time you see him he will probably be telling people how good HIS drone fishing is.

I wasn't born stupid. I took lessons!!!

A few years ago I was camping at Greens Lake in Victoria. Actually it was 4 years ago...

A man and his wife approached me. The man was red with anger and was physically shaking. He started demanding that I help him...His problem was another camper. The other camper was a big motorhome fully self contained and quite impressive...I was very impressed. I had a look at this motorhome the day before and I was very impressed !!

The mans problem ? You ask ? Well, this motorhome has something like $50,000 worth of solar panels and lithium batteries...I am like yeah, so what is your problem why are you so upset, why are you shaking, do you know you are turning red...and what do you want me to do about it ??? Along with several other questions.

He answers in a very furious kind of manner....Well I cannot afford that.

It is the same here. He cannot afford a drone and even if he could, he is too stupid to know how to fly one. So his reaction is to protest...Tall poppy syndrome!!...do not do anything better than me and do not do anything that I cannot also do !!

He is a knuckle dragging troglodyte neanderthal half cast moron...He would not know the difference between an apple and a jackfruit. But he does know what an apple is and if you gave him a jackfruit, in his mind he would look like a fool...A normal person would say - Wow a new fruit what is it, what can I do with it? etc, etc...But not the knuckle dragger...No, the knuckle dragger would say - that is not an apple and therefore it is wrong.

A drone is not a kite and therefore it is wrong.

love the video - very funny.

yeah - I mean this guy was a bit of an extreme example of a drone hater.
He was like your camping guy and just angry and stuck in his own ways. He also had a bit of a red face. ?
I'm sure he's not a very happy person and is probably pretty much against everything.

But he is not the only one I encountered who thinks drone fishing is somehow cheating.

I met a few nice people at the beach as well. They definitely weren't knuckle draggers and they weren't even fishing folks.
After a while they asked me if I feel like I'm cheating?

Then some friends asked me the same over a dinner when we started talking about drone fishing.

And a while ago another friendly fisho watched me drone fishing and joked that it's cheating.

Those are not the only ones. This cheating question comes up frequently when I mention drone fishing.
It's quite interesting really. They can't be all knuckle draggers, itsabot ?

Many people seem to think that the drone is catching the fish by itself and I just have to wait at the beach.? Or that the drone somehow can find the fish. Who knows maybe it will be possible in the future. You just sit back startup your drone and after a while it comes back with a haul of fish. Maybe then even I would agree that it's cheating.
But then you would also be cheating (even more so) if you go to the supermarket to buy your fish.

Perhaps it's just a bit of technophobia.

These boys are mean! Respect old ones, please. They are experienced in many other things.

Don't complain too much like grumpy old men!

You could make a movie about grumpy old men !!

I reckon Mark would make a great grumpy old man...I know I would make an excellent grumpy old man, I just have to get old first - haha

Old age and treachery always over comes youth and skill...Wow, you could write a song about that !!

Nah, they are too young to be completely stupid...hang on, let me take that back -

There is nothing wrong with drone fishing. These clowns just don't know how to do it and cannot afford it anyway...Friends also say it is cheating?? That is because "friends" are equals and Mark just made himself "more equal" by learning how to fly a drone and use it for fishing !!

I noticed, Dazzling79, this was your 100th post...Congrats You deserve a T-shirt. I will have a chat to Mark see if we can't arrange a T-shirt for you

Gee Zuzzz mate...You will have those weirdo greenies attacking you left, right and centre if you do that !!

There is only one way out of this...You need to go out and hug a tree...then go fly a kite !!

What did people used to use to fish before hand reel was invented? Wouldn't hand reel be cheating too compared to the old time before hand reel

Mark Totzke 4 years ago
#6943

haha, yeah I guess hand reeling would count as cheating too.
I guess I'd have to resort to catching fish with my bare hands only ?

I just tried to imagine the first guy who invented a fishing hook, clubbed to death by a group of angry cavemen because they thought he was cheating.?

I looked up some drone prices, because I want to cheat too, but man, seriously I can't afford one! How much did you pay for yours please, if you don't mind me asking? Did you buy one that was built specifically for fishing or did you have to mod it?

Mark Totzke 4 years ago

They are not that expensive anymore, if you buy a used one from ebay.
The waterproof ones that are marketed especially for drone fishing are too expensive in my opinion.
For the price of one of those you can buy at least 4 used phantoms.

I can recommend a DJI Phantom 3 or even a Phantom 2.
They have everything you need for drone fishing, like GPS, auto hover, return to home, 1km distance, good battery life, etc.
You can make a cheap release mechanism out of an old metal cloth hanger.
Or you can buy some electronic release mechanisms for these drones. But they are usually not worth the money, unless you can find a used one somewhere.

I payed about 550 AUD for my DJI phantom 3 last year.
It was used but in a good condition and came with two good batteries.
I would recommend buying a drone with at least two batteries, as buying batteries separately later could be more expensive.

All in all I caught a lot of fish with it and considering the catches and the fun I had so far it was worth the money.
And in the end not much more expensive than some of the better reels
Plus you save on petrol cause you can fish at more places and you can even film some nifty aerial videos.

You have to factor in the price for either a good surfcasting or overhead game reel, if you don't have one.
When fishing with a drone you need a lot of line capacity on your reel.

Not cheating in my book friend. The haters probably whined about fibreglass rods when they were first invented and reels with drags - well they were of the devil.
I get out in my fishing kayak with a fish finder and enjoy myself and you should be free to do the same with your drone.
I’m curious though - what happens if it crashes in the water well out to sea? Is it all over ?

Rawhide 4 years ago
#6957

Heck no, If you can catch them within the law. I think in a few years if it becomes popular, there will be people to stop it.

What about cannon bait caster Is this cheating too?

itsaboat 4 years ago
#6959

Don't show that to Mark !!

You know he will want one...He will probably strap one to the front of his kayak. He could make an attachment and air lift them on to remote islands with his drone

That would add a whole new dimension of excitement to kayak fishing ?
