Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 15:15 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Toledo

Toledo, Ohio fishing is driven by the unique combination of the Maumee River and the western basin of Lake Erie, one of North America’s premier walleye and smallmouth bass destinations. The city’s public launches, river access points, and marinas give shore and boat anglers a variety of productive options within minutes of downtown.

Seasonal patterns in Toledo start with the famous Maumee River walleye run in late March through April. Rising water and a bump in temperature push big numbers of walleyes upstream, concentrating fish between Orleans Park, Side Cut Metropark, and Buttonwood. Anglers favor 1/4–5/8 oz jigs tipped with bright twister tails in chartreuse, white, and green, cast slightly upstream and slowly swept near bottom. As water clears, longer leaders and more natural colors become more effective. Immediately after, white bass follow a similar migration, and smaller jigs, inline spinners, and small spoons produce fast action.

By late spring and summer, the focus shifts to Lake Erie’s western basin for open‑water walleye, yellow perch, and smallmouth bass. Boat anglers launch from Toledo, Oregon, and nearby marinas, trolling crawler harnesses and crankbaits along reef complexes and mud flats. Key structures include the Camp Perry reefs, Toussaint Reef, and other shoals that hold post‑spawn walleyes. In lowlight periods, trolling crankbaits high in the column can be deadly; during bright mid‑day conditions, slow‑rolling harnesses just off bottom with 1–2 oz weights often scores more fish.

Smallmouth bass fishing peaks from late May through September on rocky points, breakwalls, and reefs. Tubes, drop‑shot rigs with goby‑colored plastics, and Ned rigs are staples in 10–25 feet of water. Largemouth bass are more common in marinas, back channels, and protected bays with weeds or docks. Spinnerbaits, swim jigs, and Texas‑rigged plastics pitched to visible cover are high‑percentage approaches. Don’t overlook marina riprap and isolated weed patches, especially on overcast or breezy days when baitfish push shallow.

Toledo’s warm months also bring reliable catfish and panfish action in the Maumee River and connected backwaters. Channel catfish stack in deeper bends, below dams, and along outside turns; cut shad, chicken liver, and nightcrawlers on slip sinker rigs fished just off bottom work well. Bluegill, crappie, and rock bass cluster around current breaks, downed trees, and marina walls—target them with small jigs or live bait under a float, adjusting depth until you tick the edge of visible cover or the top of a drop.

Fall on Lake Erie sees another strong walleye bite as fish feed heavily before winter. Trolling larger crankbaits in stained water or jigging blade baits and jigging spoons on steep edges becomes a primary pattern. Cool‑water smallmouth roam mid‑depth rock, and reaction baits like jerkbaits and spinnerbaits can be outstanding on wind‑blown structure. When conditions allow, late‑season shore casting from piers and breakwalls around Toledo and nearby ports can be surprisingly productive with jigs and minnow‑style plugs.

Winter opportunities vary with ice conditions, but when safe, local harbors and protected marinas can provide good panfish, perch, and sometimes walleye action through the ice using small spoons and tungsten jigs tipped with waxworms. Across all seasons, Toledo anglers who pay attention to water clarity, current speed on the Maumee, and wind direction on Lake Erie will stay one step ahead of the bite.

The Best Fishing Spots around Toledo

Maumee River

One of the Midwest’s best-known fishing rivers, the Maumee draws anglers for the spring walleye run from late March through April, with white bass following in May; the rest of the year produces smallmouth bass, channel catfish, freshwater drum, and carp from deep bends and current seams, and boats work the lower river near its mouth into Maumee Bay while shore anglers spread through parks in Maumee, Perrysburg, and Toledo.

Lake Erie

The Western Basin of Lake Erie off Toledo is famous for walleye, yellow perch, and smallmouth bass; trolling and drifting the reefs and shoals shine from spring through fall, while shore anglers pick up perch, catfish, and sheepshead from piers and protected marinas, with charter and private boats accessing expansive structure-rich water and nearby Port Clinton and Oak Harbor ramps.

Maumee Bay

A shallow, productive arm of Lake Erie, Maumee Bay offers spring walleye staging areas, summer perch schools, and largemouth bass along emergent weeds and marina walls; boats drift jigs and harnesses while shore anglers fish piers, riprap, and access points around parks and harbors connected to the bay.

Side Cut Metropark

Set along the Maumee River’s historic canal locks, Side Cut Metropark is a signature shore spot for the walleye and white bass runs, with anglers wading riffles and casting from rocky banks; in warmer months, the same current breaks give up smallmouth bass and catfish, and nearby Orleans Park and Depot Park extend shoreline access.

Maumee Bay State Park

This large lakeside park offers multiple fishing options: piers and rock shorelines on Maumee Bay for walleye, perch, and catfish, along with inland lagoons and ponds that hold panfish and largemouth bass; boaters use nearby launches while shore anglers work windblown corners and weed edges, with additional access around Oregon and the bay’s marinas.

Cullen Park

Located in Toledo’s Point Place, Cullen Park provides a popular launch and shore access to Maumee Bay and the mouth of the Ottawa River; anglers target spring walleye and white bass in the channels, summer yellow perch and largemouth along weedlines, and catfish after dark from the riprap and fishing platforms.

Metzger Marsh

A diked coastal marsh east of Toledo, Metzger Marsh features a protected boat ramp and pier fishing for yellow perch, crappie, bluegill, and largemouth bass, with pike showing in cooler months; anglers work cuts, culverts, and the open marsh pool, and slip out to nearshore Lake Erie when conditions allow.

Magee Marsh

Known for its boardwalk, Magee Marsh also offers productive shore fishing via dikes and access points for perch, panfish, largemouth bass, and seasonal pike; the nearby causeways and canals connect to the productive nearshore waters of western Lake Erie and complement fishing at Metzger Marsh and Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge areas.

If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes.
