Lost Alvey Found !!

A few years ago or maybe 2. There was some discussion about small Alvey reels.

I mentioned that I own the smallest sidecast Alvey. A 4 inch that was sold as a combo with a rod. Pretty sure it was sold as a children compo set.

I promised to post some pics of it...But then couldn't find it !!

Anyway, I just found it...It was hiding under a 6 inch Alvey...of course !!

I must have looked in that box 3 dozen times or more. It really had me going because I remember putting the little Alvey in that box and it is not there...Turns out I just put a 6 inch on top of it haha !!

It must be 35 years that I have had it. Or maybe 30 years. It was not sold in tackle shops. I think it was a special just for Kmart.

According to their web site, Alvey do not make reels this small anymore. But they do make a 4.5 inch designed for kayaks !! It is a sidecaster but with a line guide.

I bought the 4 inch specifically to catch live bait. But for what it is, it is a very capable reel. The model is 40-B and they even still have spare parts available (not that they are ever needed).

The most interesting feature. It is left and right...Yep, both left and right handed !!

The reel foot turns 360 so it can cast left or right. Then, the switch knob has 3 setting. Left - middle - right....In the middle it free spins (with clicker) either way. But the switch knob engages anti-reverse. So one way it anti-reverses for left handed. The other way for right handed.

Here are some pics of it...The last pic is between two 6 inch. A 600-A and a 600-B. It was the 600-B that was hiding the 40-B.

PS - Yes, I know the star is upside down on the 600-A. That is how I like it.

I’ve registered here just to reply to this thread 😁

Also an Alvey lover. An Australian living in Europe, but still using my Alvey reels when I can.

The photos attached here are of an Alvey 40GDZ 4-inch reel. I think this one is somewhere between 5-10 years old though, so quite modern in Alvey terms.

Photos taken just now, and as you can see it’s still attached to a rod. I’m on summer holiday in Croatia and use this from the pier on a light spinning rod for gold-head bream (at least that’s what I hope to catch, but mostly it’s weever fish, painted combers and other small bream).

Hi phillc. Welcome to Fishing Reminder.

That is a great looking little reel. It has the same foot design as the 40B so it can turn 360 for left or right handed.

I also use mine just on a standard rod. Being only 4 inch a larger stripper guide is not really needed. It would make it better but works fine on any standard rod.
