Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 15:40 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

Next Full Moon in ~15 days on 29th June
New Moon is generally a very productive time for fishing. Dark nights mean that many predators feed more actively during daylight hours. The combined gravity of sun and moon during New Moon days has a stronger effect on all water bodies, leads to increased food availabilty and hence better fishing.
  • Distance to earth:
    363,309 km
    Proximity:
    99.5 %
We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Willmar

Fishing around Willmar, Minnesota centers on a dense cluster of glacial lakes that offer consistent action through all four seasons. Within a short drive of town, lakes like Eagle, Florida, Willmar, Foot, Long, Green, Nest, and Diamond give anglers a mix of classic walleye structure, weed-rich panfish bays, and bass and pike haunts. Most lakes feature good public access, ample shoreline structure, and manageable sizes that are easy to learn.

Seasonal patterns are pivotal in the Willmar area. In spring, as ice recedes on Eagle, Foot, and Florida, focus on warming, shallow bays with dark bottoms where crappie, bluegill, and perch slide in to feed before spawning. A small jig and plastic or crappie minnow under a float is especially effective along emerging weeds and inside turns. Early-season walleye on Long and Green Lakes relate to windblown shorelines, sand and gravel points, and the first green weed growth; light jigs tipped with fatheads or shiners produce well in 6–12 feet.

Summer on Willmar-area lakes shifts fish deeper and into more defined cover. Walleye often hold on mid-lake humps, saddles, and deeper points in 14–22 feet, especially on Green, Long, and Eagle. Live-bait rigs with leeches or crawlers, slip bobbers over rock, and bottom-bouncer–spinner combos trolled along breaks are productive patterns. Largemouth bass in Florida, Willmar, and Nest Lakes gravitate to cabbage beds, docks, and shoreline wood; topwaters at dawn, followed by Texas-rigged plastics and swim jigs as the sun climbs, take quality fish. Panfish stack on outside weedlines and around deep cabbage—small jigs with plastics or worms behind a slip float keep rods bent.

As fall cools the water, predator fish feed heavily. Walleye push shallower and become more responsive to crankbaits trolled along breaks and shorelines at low light. On lakes like Eagle and Long, casting jig-and-minnow combos on rocks and points is a reliable big-fish tactic. Bass and pike key on remaining green weeds; spinnerbaits, lipless crankbaits, and larger swimbaits worked over cabbage and coontail beds can produce some of the heaviest fish of the year. Crappie and bluegill often stage off the ends of points and basin edges, and vertically jigging small spoons or tungsten jigs over 18–30 feet is effective.

Ice fishing around Willmar is a major draw. Early ice panfish action on sheltered bays of Florida, Nest, and Eagle Lakes can be fast, with small tungsten jigs, micro plastics, and eurolarvae catching quality bluegill and crappie. As winter progresses, crappie slide toward basin holes and soft-bottom depressions, while bluegill hold closer to weed edges. Walleye ice anglers find success on Green, Eagle, and Long by targeting sunrise and sunset on points and humps with set-lines and jigging spoons. Northern pike are commonly taken on tip-ups set along weed edges and drop-offs.

Habitat and tactical tips across Willmar’s lakes revolve around reading structure and weeds. Many lakes are bowl-shaped, but nearly all have key pieces of structure—points, inside turns, offshore humps, and transition lines from sand to rock or muck. On clearer lakes like Green and parts of Eagle, downsize line, lengthen leaders, and fish low-light periods. In more stained waters like Willmar and Florida, you can use slightly heavier line, brighter colors, and noisier lures. A simple sonar/GPS combo quickly reveals breaklines and weed edges, helping you pinpoint productive zones.

Effective, travel-light setups for Willmar include a medium spinning rod for walleye and bass, a light rod for panfish, and a selection of 1/16–1/4 oz jigs, slip bobbers, small crankbaits, and soft plastics. For ice season, pair a panfish rod with tungsten jigs and a medium rod with spoons and deadsticks for walleye. By matching presentation to season, structure, and water clarity, visiting anglers can tap into the steady, multi-species action that makes the Willmar area one of central Minnesota’s most dependable fishing destinations.
