Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Williamsport
Fishing in Williamsport, PA centers on the West Branch Susquehanna River, with its mix of current seams, ledges, and mid-river rock piles that consistently hold smallmouth bass, walleye, and catfish. Spring through late fall is prime time, but different seasons favor different approaches. In early spring, target warming shallows and slower inside bends where prespawn smallmouth and walleye stage; by midsummer, fish slide to deeper ledges, channel edges, and shaded rock structure.
Seasonal patterns are critical on this river. In April and May, smallmouth bass respond well to 3–4 inch soft-plastic grubs, swimbaits, and tube jigs worked slowly along rocky bottoms, especially near tributary mouths after a rain. Walleye bite best in low-light windows; use jig-and-minnow combinations or small crankbaits ticking bottom along deeper slots. Summer brings topwater action at dawn and dusk—walk-the-dog baits, poppers, and small buzzbaits excel over shallow rock flats and current breaks. When flows drop and the sun gets high, finesse presentations with Ned rigs, drop-shot rigs, and small jerkbaits produce more consistent bites.
Habitat variety around Williamsport extends well beyond the main river. Feeder creeks and nearby stocked trout streams offer rainbow, brown, and occasional brook trout, especially in spring and early summer. Focus on riffle-to-pool transitions, undercut banks, and any shaded cover. Inline spinners, small minnow plugs, and drifted live bait or nymph rigs are reliable. For still-water options, local ponds and small lakes provide dependable largemouth bass and panfish action. Target weedlines, laydowns, and points with wacky-rigged stickbaits, Texas-rigged plastics, and small jigs tipped with soft plastics for bluegill, perch, and crappie.
River tactics for Williamsport anglers lean heavily on reading current. Productive spots include seams below islands, the downstream side of bridge pilings, and any irregular rock spine that breaks flow. In moderate to high water, move closer to shore where fish tuck behind eddies and boulders. In low, clear water, scale down line to 6–8 lb fluorocarbon, use natural colors, and make long casts to avoid spooking fish. For catfish—especially channel and flathead—anchor above deeper holes, outside bends, or riprap banks at dusk and through the night. Cut bait, live baitfish, and stinkbaits on slip sinker rigs or three-way rigs take the majority of big fish.
Access and presentation tips matter along this stretch of the Susquehanna. Jet boats and kayaks handle the shallow, rocky nature of the river best, but wading anglers can access excellent water from public pull-offs and boat ramps. Wear good traction footwear and move slowly; many of the best smallmouth hold on barely noticeable rock rises or current tongues midriver. Match lure weight to current so your bait maintains bottom contact without snagging constantly, and work baits slightly downstream to mimic natural forage. By rotating through topwater, moving baits, and bottom-contact presentations with the changing seasons and water conditions, anglers around Williamsport can consistently connect with quality fish all year.
