Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 14:58 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Winchester

Fishing around Winchester, VA is driven by a mix of small reservoirs, farm ponds, and the Shenandoah River system. Most anglers focus on nearby Lake Frederick, Lake Holiday (for those with access), the North Fork Shenandoah River, and stocked trout waters scattered through Frederick and neighboring counties. The variety of water types means you can shift tactics with the seasons and stay on fish all year.

Spring is prime time for bass and crappie near Winchester. As water temps climb into the 50s, target pre-spawn largemouth bass on Lake Frederick with suspending jerkbaits, 3–4 inch swimbaits, and finesse jigs worked along secondary points and the first drops outside shallow coves. On the North Fork Shenandoah, smallmouth bass slide up onto gravel bars and current seams; 3-inch tubes, small Ned rigs, and 1/8 oz hair jigs in green pumpkin or brown are consistent producers. Crappie stack around brush piles, laydowns, and old creek channels—vertical jig small marabou jigs or minnows just above the fish you mark on electronics.

Summer around Winchester is about beating the heat. On clear lakes like Frederick, bass pull offshore; graph for bait and isolated cover on points and humps, then work drop-shot rigs, Carolina rigs, and deep-running crankbaits through the 12–25 ft zone. Early and late in the day, throw topwaters—walking baits, poppers, and hollow frogs—over grass and shallow wood. On the Shenandoah, float fishing is extremely effective: fan-cast small topwater poppers, Whopper Ploppers, or 1/4 oz spinnerbaits to boulders, eddies, and flooded grass. Catfish become active on deeper river bends and lake channels at night; soak fresh cut bait on simple slip-sinker rigs.

Fall brings some of the best multi-species fishing near Winchester. Bass and walleye key on bait schools on main-lake points and windy shorelines. Crankbaits and 3–4 inch paddle-tail swimbaits in shad colors excel when you cover water. On the Shenandoah, smallmouth feed heavily before winter—drag football jigs, compact craw baits, or grubs across rocky flats. Panfish slide back to mid-depth brush; slip floats with small jigs or live worms are ideal for kids and beginners.

Winter calls for slower, tighter presentations. On deep lakes, look for bait balls near the dam or steep bluff banks and drop vertically with spoons or blade baits for bass and the occasional walleye. Downsize to subtle plastics on light heads, fished almost painfully slow along bottom. In the river, target deeper wintering holes and soften your approach: small hair jigs, 2.5–3 inch finesse plastics, and natural colors out-fish flashy baits in cold, clear water.

Tactical tips for Winchester waters include fishing early and late for pressured bass, downsizing line in clear water (6–8 lb fluorocarbon for finesse, 10–12 lb for moving baits), and paying attention to water color. After rains, slightly stained conditions on the Shenandoah often trigger the best bite—switch to chartreuse/white spinnerbaits, black/blue jigs, and louder topwaters. In the lakes, finding subtle offshore structure—small rock piles, isolated brush, or a single stump on a point—can be more important than the specific lure you throw. Keep a simple but proven spread of baits and rotate through them until you match what Winchester’s fish want that day.
