Alvey Reels are closing their business | Category: Fishing Talk

Didn't realise that Alvey Reels have closed their business until I've seen NemoNothing's pictures in the photo section.
That's quite sad news as I really liked the reels and their concept.

Alvey was almost a 100 years in business and they were a famous Australian fishing reel company.

Their focus was on quality and durability which supposedly led to their downfall.
The reels were so good that people only bought a reel once and it lasted for a lifetime.
In the end there were not enough new purchases to sustain the business.

Sadly it shows that these days you can better sustain a business if you deliver cheap products with a short life span and low quality. According to Alvey, half a century ago no-one would have wanted an inferior throw away product.

Yeah...sad news.

I have about a dozen or so Alvey reels. They are better than ANY geared reel...threadline, overhead...ANY geared reel !!!

I can't help but think a couple of mil spent on advertising "educating" people why a side cast direct wind reel is better could save the icon !!

better hang on to your reels, second hand Alvey Reels might be very valuable and sought after in the future.

Yeah a bit of advertising might have helped.

I have a 600B still in the original box complete with the original paper band on the spool... Want to make me an offer ??

I have another 600 size with flow through backing plate and spool so if you drop it or lay it down on the sand, you just give it a quick swish in the water and you are good to go...It has dual speed retrieve and a (rare for Alvey) star drag....It will be a classic !!!...want to make me an offer ??

PS...Sorry...Should read (rare for Alvey) LEVER drag...

Yeah, I know I could have just used the edit button, but I am feeling lazy

Haha...

I am only kidding...mind you another 20 years or so and the one still in the box will be "officially" vintage !!

I have a feeling Alvey might continue on-line... Just a hunch. It is strange that they make no mention on their web site about closing down.

They also got a website for the US with no mention of them closing down.

Yeah strange is it not ?

Apparently they announced it on their Facebook page. I am not able to log on to Facebook to check.

I don't trust FB at the best of times. All the news reports I have seen all say the source of the report is FB.

Strange that nothing is on their web site(s) about it... There are no "official" non-Facebook based reports... Maybe their FB has been hacked !!!

Be a bugger if it is not true... Guess I will just have to take that reel out of the box and use it
