My biggest South Island Perch so far | Category: Fishing Talk

I managed to catch a pretty big river perch on a Rapala lure today when trying to hunt for trout with my paddle board.
I've caught a few small ones before but that one is actually a good eating size. Got two nice fillets off it.

Is anyone else fishing for Perch? Wonder if they are good eating. I guess I'll find out tonight

Not bad going Good size.

They are good eating...But just to be on the safe side, feed it to the missus. If she doesn't keel over and stop breathing, you know it is safe to eat. haha

BTW...nice T-shirt and I see you got a new FR baseball cap too

PS. Did you paint the bus? For some reason I thought it was white.

haha - good idea trying it on the missus first.
nah, bus was always blue. The good old hiace back in the days was white. Maybe you thought of that.

well, I can confirm that Perch tastes delicious. The missus didn't keel over.
In fact it was so delicious that I only remembered to take a photo after it was almost all eaten up already.

went out the next morning and caught another one of a similar size, again on the same good old Rapala lure.

I just love fishing off my paddle board. My balance has improved quite a bit and if the water is calm enough I can cast and fish standing up instead of kneeling. Earlier I could paddle around standing up without problems, but wasn't to comfortable fishing in a standing position.

The paddle board I'm using is a Aqua Marina Fusion: http://amzn.to/2DD48ig
It's an inflatable and really stable.

So easy to carry the paddle board around and get it setup. I can launch virtually everywhere. The biggest obstacle is wind.
A bit of an off shore breeze and you got a one way ticket out to open sea. Going to try a sea anchor next.
I got a sea anchor from my old kayaking days as you can seen in the picture. But it makes a really good (cheap) catch bag, that's why I haven't used it for it's original purpose anymore

Hopefully a nice sea-run trout will be on the menu next.

She didn't keel over ???...Try giving her arsenic !! hahaha You could try a slap or a pinch but I find a nic works best haha.

I like the idea of an inflatable paddle board. That is not a bad price! even cheaper than eBay. Not suitable for me though with my spinal injury.

I have been looking at the Porta-Bote. Expensive but ideal for me...might save up and buy myself one as a chrissie pressie
