I just saw one of our members caught a baby turtle 🐢. Come on a TURTLE!

So, I just came across the thought that it will be interesting to talk about our unwanted catches!
I caught fishing lines and lures but nothing too exciting.

How about you? Do any experienced fishos out there want to share your story about this??

Great white, boat, gannet, shag.

Haha! I think I might catch one of shags one day accidentally! They are kind of nuisances!
A boat? Did you mean like an RC boat? A real boat might be a little bit difficult to catch but if you can manage that, it will be a great catch haha!

Real boat, on one of my first outings with the new-to-me Alvey reel. Ripped almost all the mono off, leaving me with a bunch of stretched mono and a blood blister under a fingernail that took a few weeks to go. Unfortunately, they didn't wrap the line around their prop.

Last shag was in front of a shocked holiday weekend phalanx of beach-goers. Wasn't pretty.

Great white was a 3hr epic adventure.

Gannets are just a PITA. From a kayak I just don't see them coming but the sound as they impact the water behind me is unmistakable, leaving just a moment or two of reaction time to get my livie out of their beaks before they surface and swallow.

Hahahaha! I remember now we also caught a bird(oystercatcher) when we took the line out with our drone. It was not actually catching but she wrapped the line around her and we had to slowly pull her to the shore and safely released her!

While fishing for red fish in the Sabine Lake, I met a guy while fishing with my daughter. We all three caught and released several bulls. A couple weeks later we coincidentally all ended up fishing together at the same pier. I had a bite (gafftop 🙄) and also snagged a leader someone had lost. It was the guy's custom Houston Astros leader he had lost a few days prior. He was amazed and grateful. I knew it was his based on the weights, hooks and beads he uses.

I once caught a fishing rod, complete with reel.

It was Leslie Dam in Queensland.

My friend lost his rod and reel off the kayak while he was fishing close to the beach. And the next day, he found his rod and reel on the shore while he walk the dog on the beach! Lucky him!

Great! 👍 Are they usable after all?

Yes. It was actually rigged with hook and sinker. I baited up and used right then and caught a fish with it.

Tied for 1st/2nd place: catfish and bat rays (both tasty--cats get deep fried in beer batter; rays get punched into scallops then deep fried in tempura)

3rd place: Sturgeon when fishing for stripers (also tasty and REALLY interesting when I'm using a trout rod and paddling my kayak)

4th place: Carp (the only fish I don't eat--goes straight into my crab/crawfish bait bucket)

5th place: Opa when fishing for tuna.

Weirdest: Shovelnose Guitarfish (tasted like a mix of shark and clams)

How did you cook your weirdest one? Did you prepare in any special ways? Rays are pretty unique to eat, right? Because of the ammonia taste. Your one looks even more unique 😉. It must have been an interesting and exciting catch, that one!

Thanks for the photo!

Filleted it (just the shark-like part of the body) cut it into strips (fish and chips size), dipped in beer batter then deep fried it in 350°F canola oil.

Beer batter=1 cup AP flour + 1 stout beer + salt & pepper + hot sauce (optional)

Served it with fries/chips made from baked potatoes (scrub, oil, bake at 350°F to an internal temp of 180°F, let cool, cut any size like, then deep fry in 350°F canola oil).

A few years back, I snagged a line and reeled it in. On one end was a rod and reel--on the other was a 4 pound rainbow trout!

I kept both 😁

This was a long time back, fall of 1969 maybe. My brother and I (about 14 &15yo) used to fish a small dam site in Constantine Michigan, pan fish, rock bass the occasional catfish or largemouth. Beside the main spill way was a rush of water guess it was called the race way, it was separated from the main dam by a wall about 18" wide, my brother and I would walk down the wall and set on the end to get better access and casting. Well this day two young brothers, neighbors of ours, showed up to try their luck, the older brother (about 12y.o.) stayed by the pool formed as the water came around to settle while unbeknownst to him his brother(about8-9y,o.) had shimmied down the wall where the older guys were, almost, he made it about 2/3rd of the way down before he splashed down in the rapid water, I caught him by the hood of his coat and helped him back up the wall to his brother who proceeded to whup his lil butt. I shouted that he's probably been through enough, Older brother says "I'm gonna catch hell for him being wet!!" Later that evening his Dad came over to our house to thank me and tell me older brother didn't Catch Hell. Pretty good catch eh? So, Alls well !
