Fish Debate On Again !!

For me, it is always a red flag warning when a person's only good attribute, is to tell me how bad the other person is !!

Almost every politician does it all the time...Every political Party has a long list of all the "BAD" things the other Party is doing...But they don't have a list of "GOOD" things they are doing themselves !!

When Commercial Fishers can only say "look at what recreational fishers are doing"...Only makes me want to take a closer look at what commercial fishers are doing !!

The Fish Debate is On Again.

Thanks for sharing the news. I generated a quick summary so I don't have to read the whole article, haha.

---

What's happening:

The Western Australian government has raised the alarm that important fish stocks — dhufish and snapper on the west coast, and red emperor in the north — are now at severe risk of collapse. Existing rules like seasonal bans and catch limits haven’t stopped the decline, so new measures such as stricter catch restrictions, mandatory reporting for recreational fishers, or spatial closures are being considered. A roundtable in October will shape the final decisions, expected by the end of 2025.

The debate, however, has become marked by blame-shifting. Commercial fishers argue that recreational fishing is the bigger problem, while recreational groups point the finger back at industry practices.

---

I personally think that commercial overfishing is the main problem and not recreational.

We just had a story where a commercial guy was caught fishing in a marine reserve in NZ.

And that's just the top of the iceberg, imagine how many of these cases go unnoticed.

I think recreational overfishing is only problematic in very easy to reach fragile eco systems, which could easily be protected by marine reserves or seasonal restrictions. Well, at least that is my opinion.

I think that is a fair summary.

In my mind when commercial fishers "blame shift" it raises a red flag. As professionals, they should be expected to understand the whole situation and be able to lead by example.

On the other hand. Recreational fishers cannot be expected to understand the whole "industry" and the workings.

Of course, there will always be some that do the wrong thing. But in general there is no incentive for a Rec fisher to do the wrong thing. Just keeping one fish over the bag limit could see them get a very large fine or even jail time. But it doesn't matter if they catch a fish or not. The next day they go to work and get paid a wage.

The commercial fisher often has millions invested and if they don't catch fish, they don't get a wage. If they don't get their minimum catch / quota, it could cost them a lot.
