could anyone please let me know of any good beaches to fish around the sydney area or as far as the gong or swansea

Can't help with the north coast. I have driven up that way many times and often thought about a fishing trip along that part of the coast.

For the Sydney area, most beaches are pretty good. Funny thing is that most Sydney-siders think to catch fish they need to head north or south. This of course leaves Sydney relatively un-fished.

Avoid the popular beaches like Bondi and Coogee...why would you want to go there when all the other beaches are relatively empty !

The harbour is good. Anywhere east of the bridge. If boating watch out for traffic. The harbour and Botany Bay can both get very rough very quick. Anywhere east of Spit Bridge is good. There are lots of sandy beaches in the harbour and all produce good fish.

I wouldn't eat or even try to catch anything in or near the Cooks River. This includes a lot of Botany Bay. On the other side, Kurnell is quite good.

Port Hacking fishes well.

Heading south...Most beaches along the south coast fish very well. I would avoid Port Kembla around the steel works. But MM beach and Fishermans beach (near the school) fish very well.

Bass Point is now open to fishing ! It's reserve notice was lifted a few weeks ago. The fish using the area as a breeding ground simply don't use the area anymore and so there is no need for it to continue as a protected area.

Any further south brings you in to the Shoalhaven where I live !...and as if I would tell a Sydney-sider where the fish are

Same here in Auckland - Lots of Aucklanders head out quite far to catch fish even though there are lots of fish right in the harbour.

Yep...very strange...

A few years ago...well maybe a little more than a few, maybe 15 years ago. I was a driver in Sydney. I done regular deliveries to a business between the bridge and the opera house. I had to drive the truck into the "people area". There was a guard there that basically made sure that when my truck and others went in, no idiots got in the way. All he really did was open the gate and direct the trucks in.

One day I arrived and he was fishing !! He put his rod down and came over to open the gate for me. Like many, I never thought fishing in the harbour was any good...so I had to ask him. He was catching snapper and had 6 all at about 3 to 4kg. !! Hundreds of people around, ferries coming and going, boats and trucks and everything else you get smack in the middle of a city and he was catching snapper almost casting distance from the opera house !

Seems that some mis-information was given out by some mis-informed news reporters...

Bushrangers Bay at Bass Point is STILL a protected area...DO NOT fish there.

There has been announcements on the radio. Rangers are patrolling the area but they understand that people have been mis-informed so they are not taking action, just asking people to leave.

The rest of Bass Point has had it's reserve statis lifted. So you can fish in other parts of Bass Point but not Bushrangers Bay.
