Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 14:34 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Charlotte

Charlotte sits in the middle of some of the Southeast’s most productive freshwater fishing, anchored by Lake Norman to the north, Lake Wylie to the south and Mountain Island Lake in between. These Catawba River reservoirs offer a mix of clear and slightly stained water, rocky banks, docks, creek arms and river current, giving anglers a variety of patterns to work with throughout the year.

Seasonal patterns are the key to consistently catching fish around Charlotte. In late winter and early spring, bass and crappie stage on secondary points and channel swings leading into creeks on Norman and Wylie. Jerkbaits, Alabama rigs and finesse jigs shine for pre-spawn spotted and largemouth bass, while crappie stack on brush piles and bridge pilings and fall for small jigs and minnows. As water temperatures move into the 60s, fish push shallow to spawn in protected pockets, marinas and coves—this is prime time for sight-fishing bass and pitching small jigs and beetle spins to visible crappie and bream beds.

Summer in Charlotte means early and late are best. On bright days, bass and striped bass on Lake Norman pull offshore to humps, ledges and deep docks. Drop shots, shaky heads, deep-diving crankbaits and vertically jigged spoons are consistent producers. On Lake Wylie, a shallower and more stained lake, night fishing becomes highly effective: slow-roll spinnerbaits and big worms around docks and riprap for bass, while catfish anglers anchor on channel edges with cut bait for blue and flathead catfish. Mountain Island Lake, with its cooler water and riverine feel, often fishes better mid-day than the other lakes, especially where current is present below the dam and at creek mouths.

Fall is one of the most reliable times across Charlotte waters. Cooling temperatures push baitfish shallow into creeks on all three lakes. Watch for schooling activity and surface busts—small walking topwaters, lipless crankbaits and flukes catch schooling spotted bass and hybrid/striped bass on Norman and Wylie. Crappie slide back to mid-depth brush (12–20 feet), and slow-trolling jigs along creek channels is a high-percentage approach.

In winter, focus on the warmest water you can find: sun-baked rock, power plant outflows and mid-lake areas that hold bait. On Lake Norman and Mountain Island, vertical presentations with spoons, ice jigs and blade baits around bait clouds on your electronics produce bass, stripers and white perch. Catfish concentrate in deeper river channels on Wylie; use larger fresh cut bait and give each spot 30–45 minutes before moving.

Habitat and tactical tips around Charlotte revolve around docks, offshore structure and current seams. Docks are year-round bass magnets; skip soft plastics or jigs as far back as possible, especially on Norman’s clear water. Offshore points and humps are critical on Norman and Mountain Island—graph thoroughly before dropping a lure. On Wylie, focus more on shoreline targets, wood and shallow ledges. For bank fishing, public access points, bridges and fishing piers on all three lakes provide reach to productive water; downsize line and tackle in clear water and lean on live bait (minnows, worms, cut bait) when introducing new anglers to the Charlotte fishing scene.

The Best Fishing Spots around Charlotte

Lake Norman

The largest reservoir in North Carolina, Lake Norman is a year-round hotspot for largemouth and spotted bass, with strong action on striped bass, crappie, white perch, and blue catfish; spring brings shallow bass and crappie bites, summer favors deep humps and night catfish, and fall/winter see schooling stripers on points and creek mouths; ample access from Blythe Landing, Ramsey Creek Park, and Lake Norman State Park.

Lake Wylie

Straddling the NC–SC line southwest of Charlotte, Lake Wylie offers excellent multi-species fishing for largemouth bass, crappie, blue and channel catfish, and white perch; fish docks and coves in spring, main-lake points and bridges in summer, and creek channels in fall, with reliable access near Buster Boyd Bridge and McDowell Nature Preserve.

Catawba River

Flowing through the Charlotte region, the Catawba River produces strong catches of striped bass (below dams), largemouth and spotted bass, flathead and blue catfish, and panfish; focus on current seams, eddies, and tailraces year-round, with best action around cool mornings and power-generation periods; shore and boat access are common between Mountain Island Lake and Lake Wylie.

Mountain Island Lake

A smaller, productive reservoir just northwest of Charlotte, Mountain Island Lake is known for spotted bass, largemouth, crappie, and blue catfish; spring targets include rocky points and protected coves, summer fish hold on ledges and brush, and fall schooling occurs in the main lake; popular access from Latta Nature Preserve and Riverbend areas.

Buster Boyd Bridge

This prominent crossing of Lake Wylie concentrates bait and gamefish around its pilings and channel, producing white perch, crappie, catfish, and bass; fish current breaks and shade lines, with summer and fall bites often strongest; nearby ramps and shoreline make it a reliable landmark alongside McDowell Nature Preserve.

Badin Lake

East of Charlotte in the Uwharrie region, Badin Lake is a deep, clear reservoir known for largemouth bass, spotted bass, striped bass, catfish, and crappie; spring action heats up in creeks and shallow pockets, summer patterns move to ledges and points, and winter jigging works over deep bait; a popular complement to closer waters like Lake Norman and Lake Wylie.
