Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Charlotte
Charlotte sits in the middle of some of the Southeast’s most productive freshwater fishing, anchored by Lake Norman to the north, Lake Wylie to the south and Mountain Island Lake in between. These Catawba River reservoirs offer a mix of clear and slightly stained water, rocky banks, docks, creek arms and river current, giving anglers a variety of patterns to work with throughout the year.
Seasonal patterns are the key to consistently catching fish around Charlotte. In late winter and early spring, bass and crappie stage on secondary points and channel swings leading into creeks on Norman and Wylie. Jerkbaits, Alabama rigs and finesse jigs shine for pre-spawn spotted and largemouth bass, while crappie stack on brush piles and bridge pilings and fall for small jigs and minnows. As water temperatures move into the 60s, fish push shallow to spawn in protected pockets, marinas and coves—this is prime time for sight-fishing bass and pitching small jigs and beetle spins to visible crappie and bream beds.
Summer in Charlotte means early and late are best. On bright days, bass and striped bass on Lake Norman pull offshore to humps, ledges and deep docks. Drop shots, shaky heads, deep-diving crankbaits and vertically jigged spoons are consistent producers. On Lake Wylie, a shallower and more stained lake, night fishing becomes highly effective: slow-roll spinnerbaits and big worms around docks and riprap for bass, while catfish anglers anchor on channel edges with cut bait for blue and flathead catfish. Mountain Island Lake, with its cooler water and riverine feel, often fishes better mid-day than the other lakes, especially where current is present below the dam and at creek mouths.
Fall is one of the most reliable times across Charlotte waters. Cooling temperatures push baitfish shallow into creeks on all three lakes. Watch for schooling activity and surface busts—small walking topwaters, lipless crankbaits and flukes catch schooling spotted bass and hybrid/striped bass on Norman and Wylie. Crappie slide back to mid-depth brush (12–20 feet), and slow-trolling jigs along creek channels is a high-percentage approach.
In winter, focus on the warmest water you can find: sun-baked rock, power plant outflows and mid-lake areas that hold bait. On Lake Norman and Mountain Island, vertical presentations with spoons, ice jigs and blade baits around bait clouds on your electronics produce bass, stripers and white perch. Catfish concentrate in deeper river channels on Wylie; use larger fresh cut bait and give each spot 30–45 minutes before moving.
Habitat and tactical tips around Charlotte revolve around docks, offshore structure and current seams. Docks are year-round bass magnets; skip soft plastics or jigs as far back as possible, especially on Norman’s clear water. Offshore points and humps are critical on Norman and Mountain Island—graph thoroughly before dropping a lure. On Wylie, focus more on shoreline targets, wood and shallow ledges. For bank fishing, public access points, bridges and fishing piers on all three lakes provide reach to productive water; downsize line and tackle in clear water and lean on live bait (minnows, worms, cut bait) when introducing new anglers to the Charlotte fishing scene.
